Apple traditionally has leaned toward refreshing its products annually, but it's looking like the company might step out of character by releasing the next version of the iPad sooner than that.
The impetus? Upcoming competition, of course, and Apple's weapon for dealing with that competition: FaceTime, Apple's new video-conferencing technology. With FaceTime and their built-in front- and rear-facing cameras, the new iPod Touch and iPhone 4 let users conduct video chats with one click of the FaceTime button.
That makes the camera missing from the iPad an all-the-more-glaring omission. According to AppleInsider, Apple is already testing FaceTime on the iPad, and shooting for a launch of the revamped tablet no later than the first quarter of next year. Other analysts, however, say the idea that Apple would release such an incremental change is ridiculous.
Meanwhile, Fortune speculates that the company also plans to add FaceTime to its laptops and desktops as well.
