Earth Day giveaways worth tracking down

Consumer Reports News: April 22, 2011 12:40 PM

We’ve rounded up some planet-friendly freebies that businesses are rolling out today in the name of Earth.

And yes, the real intention of Earth Day is to inspire awareness and appreciation of our natural environment. There is no reason, however, that you can’t show your support for this planet by taking advantage of today’s free perks.

Perhaps the free offer in our roundup that hits the closest to the true mission of Earth Day is the Free National Park Week. You can visit one of the country’s numerous national parks and monuments for free today or over this weekend. Check out the National Park Services website for more information and locations of parks and monuments near you.

Some noteworthy Earth Day deals:

  • Free or discounted national park apps. Free for the iPhone, or $1 for Android. These deals expire at the end of Sunday. Apps include information about ranger programs, park shuttles, trails, and times of sunset and sunrise, among other helpful information. Find other free green apps detailed here.
  • Get a free tree. Lowe’s home improvement stores are giving away 1 million tree saplings on Saturday. Probably best to get there early.
  • Free coffee or tea at Starbucks if you bring in your own reusable coffee mug or canister.
  • If you bring in your old cosmetic empties to an Origins location you can get a free facial cleanser.
