Hoover vacuum's soap-opera saga could boost sales

Consumer Reports News: April 20, 2011 01:03 PM

Hoover Corp. could reap a vacuum-sales bonanza after yanking its ads from All My Children and One Life to Live to protest ABC's cancellation of the storied soaps. After a Hoover executive posted the news on the company's Facebook page, dozens of fans detailed plans to buy the brand's vacuums out of gratitude and Soap Opera Digest has declared this Friday "Buy Hoover Day." But be warned: Just as the soaps have slipped in the TV ratings, so has Hoover in some Consumer Reports reliability scores.

"My wife and mother are both passionate viewers of All My Children and One Life to Live, as are many of my colleagues here at Hoover. We were and are as disappointed with this news as you are," wrote Brian Kirkendall, Hoover vice president of marketing, in a special post on the company's Facebook page late Monday. The page has since drawn over 350 comments, including ones like: "I am now officially a Hoover buyer for life! I used to dream of a Dyson but now it's "Dyson who?"

Think twice before buying a Hoover upright, however: While Hoovers scored at or near the top of our most recent upright and canister vacuum tests, Consumer Reports has found many more-reliable upright brands in its annual product reliability survey. (Hoover canisters have fared better for reliability and remain among our top picks.)

See the video below for the pros and cons of upright and canister vacuums, along with robotic and stick vacs. Also check out the how we test video for a detailed look at our challenging pet-hair tests.
