Honda has released an image of its redesigned 2012 CR-V, scheduled to go on sale this fall.

In recent years, Honda has routinely shown concepts for new models styled quite similarly to the production models they portend, and we expect the same to hold true for the CR-V.

Details are limited for now, but Honda has stated that the new CR-V will feature, among other things, a more fuel-efficient engine and reduced body weight.

The exterior freshening gives it a more upright stance with a grille akin to that on the Accord Crosstour. An all-new interior is said to be a “more accommodating and spacious design,” and it will have a lower cargo floor.

The outgoing CR-V remains extremely popular in its fifth production year, and it holds its own in our testing, with a strong overall test score. However, there are now several models and variants outscore the CR-V in the small sport-utility vehicle class.

Its shortcomings are slight, with road noise and rear-corner visibility counting among its deficits. As competition advances, the promise of improved fuel economy is welcomed.

We look forward to getting behind the wheel of the 2012 Honda CR-V to see if it improves upon the respectable model it replaces. There are times when new models are better than those they replace, but we have learned from recent Honda introductions that this is not always the case.
