AOL today announced the relaunch of its free music-streaming service, now called AOL Radio powered by Slacker. The Pandora rival now gives users access to new features on the Slacker interface.

Formerly powered by CBS, the revamped service has cut its audio advertising by half and created easier access to its original programmed stations. New features include more customization and personalization options and a longer player sleep timeout, among others. The relaunched site offers a catalog of more than 10 million songs and includes new custom artist stations and ESPN Radio, in addition to AOL's 200 stations.

Next month, in addition to the free service that is available today, AOL Radio powered by Slacker will offer two subscription products in November (no prices announced yet):

  • Radio Plus will feature completely ad-free listening without audio or banner advertisements, as well as unlimited song skips, song lyrics, and offline listening for mobile.
  • Premium Radio will have all the features of Radio Plus as well as on-demand listening by song, album, artist or custom playlist.

The free AOL Radio by Slacker App for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch can be downloaded at the Apple Store. A new app for Android is expected later this year.

Current users will have to redo their presets the first time they use the new AOL Radio Web player or mobile app. The new AOL Radio is not supported on dial-up or modem connections (which, presumably, some AOL fans are still using).
