Recall: 8,000 drop-side cribs sold at JC Penney—entrapment, suffocation hazards

Consumer Reports News: October 06, 2011 11:08 AM

About 8,000 drop-side cribs have been recalled because the drop-side rails can fall out of position, creating a space that a child can become entrapped in, leading to strangulation or suffocation.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is aware of nine incidents involving drop side rails that malfunctioned or detached, including one report of a child who sustained minor abrasions to the arm. The drop-side cribs, made by Yu Wei of Taiwan, were sold at and in the JC Penney catalog from January 2006 through December 2010 for $300 to $450. The cribs were sold in antique white, pecan and dark cherry.

The following information is listed on the inside of the crib end panel:

  • Scroll Crib: Model number 343-8225, with date code between January 2006 and December 2010.
  • Lauren Crib: Model number 343-9117, with date code between January 2007 and December 2010.

In addition to entrapment and suffocation hazards, drop-side cribs can also be hazardous because children can fall out of the crib when the drop-side rail falls unexpectedly or detaches from the crib. Drop-side rail failures can also occur due to incorrect assembly or with age-related wear and tear. At a minimum, the CPSC recommends that you do not use a crib that is older than 10 years.

This past summer, federal rules went into effect requiring all cribs manufactured and sold after June 28, 2011 meet new and improved safety standards. However, the new rules do not apply to drop-side cribs that had been purchased before that date. Although they cannot be resold, many drop-side cribs are already in consumer homes. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and contact Yu Wei to get a free immobilizer kit for the drop side. In the meantime, parents are encouraged to find an alternate, safe sleep environment for the child, such as a bassinet, play yard or toddler bed, depending on your childs age.
