Breville is the best food processor in consumer reports ratings

Consumer Reports News: January 09, 2012 11:00 AM

Consumer Reports has a new top-rated food processor—if you’re willing to spend top dollar and have plenty of storage space in your kitchen. Introducing the Breville Sous Chef BFP800XL, a $400 model that aced most of our tough tests, vaulting it past Cuisinart to the top of the latest Consumer Reports food processor ratings.

The Breville Sous Chef BFP800XL proved excellent at a variety of tasks, including slicing mushrooms, chopping nuts, shredding carrots, and grating cheese. And it comes with many added features, like an adjustable slicing disk, mini-bowl attachment, and whipping blade. But the Breville's lofty price tag puts it squarely in the premium class of food processors, and it's one of the biggest devices we've tested, weighing 19 pounds and standing nearly 18 inches tall. Since you probably won't want to haul it in and out of cabinet, you'll need adequate counter space. The storage container for the Breville's various blades and accessories, meanwhile, looks like something you might find with a heavy-duty power tool, so you'll need storage for it somewhere in the kitchen as well.

If the Breville is more food processor than you want, Consumer Reports recommends several models that cost significantly less and feature lighter, more compact housings. Just make sure to review all of the various categories in our Ratings to find the model that best suits your needs. A food processor is one of those devices that can handle a lot of tasks, but some models excel in different areas. For example, if you can live with less than perfect chopping, a $200 Cuisinart we tested delivers very good results at all other tasks.

Consumer Reports also has updated Ratings for food choppers. These mini-processors can be effective at smaller tasks, such as chopping nuts and herbs or grating a small chunk of cheese. Most models weigh three pounds or less and they're much smaller than food processors, so storage is simple. Here again, Cuisinart (the Mini Prep Plus DLC-2A) comes second in our Ratings, behind the Ninja Master Prep Professional QB1004. However, not every Ninja we tested excelled—one model in particular had an overall score of 21 out of 100—so be sure to review the results and model names carefully.
