2013 Scion FR-S sports coupe starts at $25,000, priced less than Subaru BRZ

Consumer Reports News: April 25, 2012 04:38 PM

Scion today announced pricing on its upcoming, rear-drive FR-S sports coupe. The car will sell for $24,930 with a six-speed manual transmission and $26,030 with a six-speed automatic, factoring destination charges. That makes the FR-S less expensive than its mechanical twin, the Subaru BRZ.

The BRZ goes on sale in May, starting at $26,260 with a manual and $27,365 for an automatic. What accounts for the price difference between the cars is the standard navigation system with Bluetooth and HID headlamps on the Subaru, and the lower, "no-haggle" price for the Scion.

The Scion will come standard with an eight-speaker, 300-watt Pioneer audio system with HD Radio and Bluetooth. An upgraded audio system called Be-Spoke will offer additional connectivity with smartphone integration of owners' Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Both cars use a new 200-hp, 2.0-liter Subaru flat four-cylinder engine with a low center of gravity. As you can see in the video below, we've had a chance to play with, uh, evaluate the BRZ briefly at our track, and our test engineers thought it was off the chart on the fun scale..

Needless to say, we look forward to buying these cars to run them through our test program. The FR-S will arrive in dealerships in June, about a month after the BRZ.
