Dream On Me recalls child bath seats due to drowning hazard

Consumer Reports News: December 07, 2012 01:08 PM

Dream On Me has recalled about 50,000 bath seats because they can tip over, posing a drowning risk to babies. The Consumer Product Safety Committee and Dream on Me have received five reports from consumers involving the bath seats.

The recalled bath seats also fail to meet federal safety standards, including stability requirements. Incident reports to the CPSC and Dream On Me included a near drowning involving a 12-month-old.

The recall includes all Dream On Me bath seats, which were sold for $25 to $40 at small retail stores and by online retailers, including Amazon and Wayfair.com, between July and September 2012. Some of the seats have a Dream On Me label under or on the rear of the seat. Model numbers are printed underneath the seats and on the product packaging, and include the following models and colors:

    Model name Model number Color
    Baby Bath Seat
    251B, 251O, 251P, 251Y Green with orange tray,
    orange with beige tray,
    or yellow with green tray
Ultra 2 in 1 Infant Bath Tub
    and Toddler Bath Seat
252B, 252P Solid pink, blue or white body
and a blue or pink bottom
    Niagra Baby Bath Seat
    253B, 253G, 253P, 253Y White or blue body with a
    green, pink or orange insert

Consumer Reports safety experts advise against using infant bath seats and inflatable bath tubs. For more read Dangerous bath products. And check out our baby bathtub buying guide for more on small baby baths, which are lightweight and portable so you can put them just about anywhere. Some are designed to rest inside or over a sink, while others are used inside an adult-sized tub.

If you have one of the recalled bath seats stop using it and contact Dream On Me to for a free replacement baby bathtub. For more information call Dream On Me at 877-201-4317, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit dreamonme.com and click Recalls.

In addition, Dream On Me has also recalled about 900 child bed rails because they can separate from a mattress allowing a child to be entrapped if it slips between the rail and the mattress, posing a suffocation and strangulation hazard. The bed rails were sold at small independent stores and online at Amazon and Wayfair.com from September 2011 through May 2012 for $15 to $30. The rail's white metal frame is covered by blue or pink mesh, and measures 17 inches high by 41 inches long. "Dream on Me" is printed on the top rail. For more information call the number or visit the Dream On Me website listed above.
