Paint reviews

Consumer Reports is the only place to find unbiased, independent paint reviews. We have buying advice and Ratings for both interior paint and exterior paint. Should you select paint strictly by brand name? Do different types of paint finishes, like eggshell, flat, and gloss, perform differently in different brands? What about mildew-resistance in exterior paint?

Our paint experts at the Consumer Reports National Testing and Research Center have evaluated more than 50 different paints at our on-site paint-testing labs. Our reviews will provide you with Ratings, where you will find the exact numerical score our experts have assigned to each of the 10 tested review criteria that make up our reviews: hiding, staining, gloss change, scrubbing, surface-smoothness, mildew-resistance, sticking-resistance, fade-resistance, self-priming, and zero-VOC claims. We review such paint brands as Benjamin Moore, Valspar, Behr, Clark & Kensington, Olympic, Farrow & Ball, Glidden, and many others. Our paint review Ratings chart makes it easy to compare different paint types and brands so you can find the right interior paint or exterior paint for your needs.

After reading the paint reviews, you can compare models, review our list of the features and specifications, read user reviews, and submit your own review. If you prefer visual information, you can watch our paint video buying guide.

What's behind our paint Ratings?

Experts at our National Testing and Research Center tested 43 models in paints to see which ones perform best.
We look for:
  • Overall score
Overall score includes primarily a paint's hiding performance, and resistance to staining, gloss change , scrubbing, sticking, mildew, and fading, along with surface smoothness,. VOC level does not factor into the overall score. Most results were developed from tests of white and medium-tint bases in the flat/matte, eggshell/satin and semi-gloss finishes.
  • Hiding
Hiding reflects how well a paint covers dark colors mainly with one-coat.
  • Staining
Staining shows how well a paint resists tough oil and water based stains.
  • Gloss change
Gloss change notes the change in appearance when a paint is cleaned aggresively.
  • Scrubbing
Scrubbing shows how a paint holds up to many abrasive cleanings.
  • Surface smoothness
Surface smoothness indicates an absence of roller, brush or run marks when the paint is dry.
  • Resists mildew
Best at resisting mildew growth. Best for bathrooms, laundry rooms and other damp places.
  • Resists sticking
Best at not remaining tacky when dry. Best for windows, doors and shelves.
  • Resists fading
Best at maintaining its color in strong sunlight. Best for very sunny spaces.
  • Self-priming
Paint does not require use of a primer prior to painting bare walls or wood or walls previously painted with semi-gloss or high gloss finishes.
  • Claims zero VOCs
Paint contains no VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
