Mower from a lawn mower sale.

If you need a new lawn mower this summer, Memorial Day weekend might be the best time to buy one. That’s because in-store inventories are still plentiful and retailers cut prices in an effort to get more foot traffic during the three-day shopping stretch.

“If you shop for a lawn mower on Memorial Day weekend, you’ll see two types of discounts,” says Courtney Pennicooke, the Consumer Reports market analyst who tracks lawn mowers and outdoor power equipment. “You’ll see some sales that end immediately after the holiday weekend, but you’ll also see some retailers adjusting their prices lower for the entire season on certain models.”

Discounts tend to be steepest on older models. You’ll also find discounts on string trimmers, another useful tool for keeping your yard groomed.

Of course, a deal is only a deal if you’re getting a good price on a tool that works well. Cross-check any model you buy against our lawn mower and tractor ratings, and string trimmer ratings. If you’re confused about what kind of tool you need, start with our buying guides for lawn mowers and tractors, and string trimmers.

The deals below represent some of the best Memorial Day lawn mower sales we’ve seen, plus a few for string trimmers.

The Best Sales on Lawn Mowers

Ego LM2102SP
Type: Battery-powered self-propelled mower
Regular price: $599
Memorial Day price: $499
Where to buy: Home Depot
CR’s take: This self-propelled electric mower is a feat in engineering. The Ego is one of the only electrics that can run a long time and continue to cut well, despite using about 20 percent of the battery’s life to power the wheels. It’s a strong performer when mulching or side-discharging, though it’s not the best bagger. It earns a score of Excellent in our ease-of-use tests, in large part because of its effortless, instant starting.

Toro SmartStow Recycler 20339
Type: Gas self-propelled mower
Regular price: $349
Memorial Day price: $329
Where to buy: Home Depot
CR’s take: The Recycler is one of the best mulching mowers in our ratings, earning a score of Excellent in that test. Its biggest selling point? The specially designed engine, which has seals that allow the mower to be collapsed and stored upright without leaking fuel or oil.

Troy-Bilt TB130 XP
Type: Gas push mower
Regular price: $259
Memorial Day price: $229
Where to buy: Lowe’s
CR’s take: This push mower from Troy-Bilt earns Very Good scores in our tests for mulching and cutting in side-discharge mode. At this price, it’s an excellent deal on a nimble and highly maneuverable machine.

Troy-Bilt TB110
Type: Gas push mower
Regular price: $219
Memorial Day price: $199
Where to buy: Lowe’s
CR’s take: This modest little push mower handles almost effortlessly, though it’s not the best bagger—it earns a score of only Fair in our bagging test. Still, it fares better when cutting in mulch or side-discharge mode, and for a bit less than $200, it’s a tough deal to beat.

Honda HRR216VKA
Type: Gas self-propelled mower
Regular price: $429
Memorial Day price: $399
Where to buy: Home Depot
CR’s take: Honda’s self-propelled gas mowers are in a class by themselves. This model earns a score of Excellent for mulching, but it’s no slouch in other cutting modes, either. It’s pricey for a walk-behind mower, but the $30 discount makes it worthy of consideration.

Toro 20377
Type: Gas self-propelled mower
Regular price: $309
Memorial Day price: $289
Where to buy: Home Depot
CR’s take: This competent little machine leaves little to be desired. It earns a score of Very Good for bagging and side-discharge cutting, and for less than $300, you’d be hard-pressed to find a self-propelled mower that offers more value for the money.

Like all straight-shaft models, it’s best suited for taller users. If you’re on the shorter side, look for a curved-shaft string trimmer.
