Gas grills take a real beating. Youād never expect your fridge to hum along smoothly after youāve shifted it around your deck, moved it in and out of your garage for storage twice a year, or left it out in the rain. But we subject our gas grills to exactly thatāand still expect them to light up effortlessly and sear our burgers and brats without a hitch. Itās no wonder so many brands disappoint. Fortunately, we know that a fair number are, in fact, up to that challenge based on data from our member surveys.
While our test engineers assess dozens of models for performance each year, our survey department asks thousands of members about their own gas grills, looking for the brands that hold up well over time.Ā
In Consumer Reportsā latest surveys, conducted in the fall of 2019 and the summer of 2020 and 2021, members reported on their experiences with nearly 70,000 gas grills purchased new between 2011 and 2021. Specifically, we asked members about problems they had with their grills, and used a statistical model to turn those answers into ratings for predicted reliability by the fifth year of ownership. We also asked members how likely they were to recommend their grill to a friend or family member. Those responses were used for our owner satisfaction ratings.Ā
