Reads MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG, FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, and WAV files. Free remote control apps downloaded to Apple or Android mobile devices or Sonos software installed on computers are used to control the system. Operation requires a minimum of a home network with a modem and router (a wireless router is needed for remote control using apps downloaded to iOS and Android devices). Can be combined with additional optional Sonos speakers to operate as multi-room Wi-Fi speaker system and as a 3.1, 5.0, or 5.1 channel surround sound system in the same room. Can receive content via WiFi directly; in weak WiFi signal situations operation can be improved by connecting it, or some other Sonos component, directly to the network router with an Ethernet cable. The Sonos streaming system can source content from Internet audio streaming services, the audio files on the PC it's network linked to, and any Android device that is being used as a remote control. Additional Internet audio streaming services are periodically added and made available through the mobile and PC based controller apps. Audio can be streamed to up to 32 separate rooms using Sonos speaker systems. Also compatible with Apple AirPlay 2 - can stream audio files directly from an Apple mobile device or a linked Apple Music Internet audio account to the Playbase, use the Playbase in an AirPlay 2 based multi-room configuration with other AirPlay 2 compatible devices on the same network, and stream content received via Airplay 2 to other AirPlay 2 and non-Airplay 2 compatible Sonos audio devices. The Playbase's volume and mute functions can be controlled by voice commands when used with optional Amazon Alexa digital voice assistant devices like the Amazon Echo or Echo Dot or with optional Google Assistant digital voice assistant devices like the Google Home or Home Mini, and Apple Siri voice commands can be used to control Apple Music streaming when the Playbase is used with Apple AirPlay 2 compatible mobile devices. Analog audio input is available via steaming to the Playbase from optional Sonos Play:5, Connect, Port, Connect Amp, or Amp products connected to the same network. The Playbase receives audio from a TV via an optical cable connection which can be set to override other music sources and play on only the Playbase and its associated surround sound system components, if any, and not stream to other system components.
