Three-day holiday weekends are usually a good time to find deals on appliances—but not every model that’s on sale is a winner.

As we head into Presidents Day weekend, Consumer Reports scoured retailers’ sites for the best deals on washers right now.

“Typically, you’ll find deeper discounts on models that came out three or four years ago,” says Mark Allwood, a senior market analyst covering laundry appliances for CR. “But these machines are still worth considering, given that innovative features on washers have slowed down in the past 18 months.” And keep in mind that most innovations, such as multitasking machines, start out on higher-end washers that cost more than $1,000.

Another constant? Matching washer and dryer sets remain popular, and manufacturers usually price the washer and matching dryer the same. For each washer we’ve highlighted below, we also list the matching dryer in case you’re looking to replace both.

Before you shop, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Sears recently avoided liquidation and remains open for business. Appliance warranties are covered by the manufacturers, but for Kenmore, Sears’ house brand, the retailer is responsible for warranties.

JCPenney, however, is pulling the plug on appliances. “We will sell new major appliances in stores and online through Feb. 28,” says Sarah Holland, senior manager of corporate communications. “Beginning March 1, JCPenney plans to liquidate each store’s entire inventory of floor models, which will be advertised in local markets.”

Major retailers price-match, and the details vary. Best Buy, Home Depot, JCPenney, Lowe’s, and Sears do not offer a price-match guarantee, however, if a competitor has a liquidation sale. When comparing deals, note whether fees apply for delivery, haul-away, and basic hook-up.

To make it easier for you to choose, this list of deals is organized by washer type. The models are listed alphabetically (not in order of CR rank), and CR members can click each model name to see all the details. We include the sale price for each (“The deal”), along with what you’re saving off the listed retail price.

End dates for the sales highlighted below vary.

Best Deals on Agitator Top-Loaders

Agitator top-loaders remain a popular choice, though they aren’t the best washers we’ve tested. They’re typically noisy and not so gentle on fabrics.

The deal:
$529 at Best BuyHome Depot, and Lowe’s
Savings: Up to $250
This washer sold for $675 last September, then dropped to $498 during Black Friday sales—so $529 is indeed a good deal. The GE GTW485ASJWS is one of the best at cleaning in this category, earning a Very Good rating in washing performance, meaning it  removed many of the tough stains from our test swatches.
Matching dryer: GE GTD45EASJWS (electric) and GE GTD45GASJWS (gas). Note: GE’s gas dryers cannot be recommended because of subpar reliability ratings.

The deal: $599 at Best Buy, Home Depot, JCPenney, and Lowe’s
Savings: Up to $250
The GE GTW685BSLWS is the only agitator top-loader tested to garner an Excellent rating in our water-efficiency tests. It used 11.5 gallons of water to do a load (the biggest water hog in our ratings used 25.5 gallons) in our tests. Wash time is a brisk 50 minutes (same as the GE above).
Matching dryer: GE GTD65EBSJWS (electric) and GE GTD65GBSJWS (gas). Note: GE’s gas dryers cannot be recommended because of subpar reliability ratings.

Maytag MVWB865GW
The deal:
$729 at Best Buy, Home Depot, and Lowe’s
Savings: $170 to $270
This washer went for $900 over a year ago, then dropped to $629, but the price has crept up over the past 12 months. The Maytag MVWB865GW rates a Good in our washing performance tests, like many agitator washers do, telling you that it should clean most loads well but will have a tougher time with heavy stains (pretreating the stains can help).
Matching dryer: Maytag MEDB835DW (electric) and Maytag MGDB835DW (gas).

Maytag MVWB965HC
The deal:
$1,098 at Home Depot and Lowe’s
Savings: $300
This washer debuted last August and sold for around $1,300 for months, then dipped to $1,099 in November. Sure, even on sale this is an expensive agitator top-loader, so why consider it? The Maytag MVWB965HC rates a Very Good in washing performance, something very few agitator washers do. And it has a claimed capacity of 6 cubic feet, making it one the biggest of all 100-plus washers tested, so you can do more laundry in one load. That’s good, given the wash time clocks in at 80 minutes, one of the longest among agitator models.
Matching dryer: Maytag MEDB955FC (electric) and Maytag MGDB955FW (gas).

Best Deals on High-Efficiency Top-loaders

HE top-loaders do not have a center-post agitator, and as a group, deliver better cleaning while using less water than agitator washers. They aren’t usually gentle on fabrics, but many are gentler than the churning of an agitator washer.

Kenmore Elite 31552
The deal: $760 at Sears
Savings: $600
The lowest we’ve seen this washer go for is $750 (and it peaked at $976 this past year), so this weekend’s sale is close to the best price you’ll find. The Kenmore Elite 31552 garners a Very Good rating in washing performance, and gets the job done in 75 minutes. The Accela Wash option speeds that time up, and our tests found that it didn’t affect cleaning.
Matching dryer: Kenmore Elite 61552 (electric) and Kenmore Elite 71552 (gas).

The deal: $720 at Best BuyHome DepotJCPenney, and Lowe’s
LG introduced the LG WT7100CW in August for about $800, and we saw it drop to $625 around Black Friday. At $720, this is the least expensive of the top-scoring HE washers in our ratings. Even better, it’s the only one of the 41 models in this category to earn an Excellent rating in washing performance, meaning it can remove most tough stains. Wash time is 75 minutes. It’s noisy, but consider how much that matters to you.
Matching dryer: LG DLE7100CW (electric) and LG DLG7101W (gas).

Best Deals on Front-Loading Washers

The best front-loaders we tested outclean agitator washers and most HE top-loaders, all while being water-efficient and extracting more of the water, cutting dryer time.

Electrolux EFLS627UTT
The deal: $998 at Home Depot
Savings: $201
The lowest we’ve seen this washer go for is $958, and that was during Black Friday sales, so this sale is solid. This front-loader garners an Excellent in washing performance, meaning it can remove most tough stains. It clocks in at 85 minutes, using the normal wash/heavy soil setting.
Matching dryer: Electrolux EFME627UTT (electric) and Electrolux EFMG627UTT (gas).

Kenmore 41262
The deal: $560 at Sears
Savings: $500
Front-loaders are the most expensive washer type, and you won’t find many for less than $700. This Kenmore sold for nearly $800 last October. Gentle on fabrics, the Kenmore 41262 earns an Excellent rating in our gentleness tests, and does an impressive job cleaning.
Matching dryer: Kenmore 81182 (electric) and Kenmore 91182 (gas).

The deal: $729 at Best BuyHome Depot, JCPenney, and Lowe’s
Savings: Up to $170
A CR Best Buy, the LG WM3500CW offers very impressive performance at an appealing price—even when it’s not on sale. It garners an Excellent rating in washing performance. This washer isn't as gentle on fabrics as most front-loader we tested, however, and wash time is 105 minutes using the normal wash/heavy-soil setting (the normal-soil setting is faster). It’s WiFi-enabled.
Matching dryer: LG DLE3500W (electric) and LG DLG3501W (gas).

The deal:
$1,299 at Home Depot and Lowe’s
Savings: $500
This washer dipped in price to $1,195 during Black Friday sales, and it has climbed to as high as $1,600. The LG WM9000HVA aces our washing performance tests, rating an Excellent. This machine boasts one of the largest capacities in the front-loader category: 5.2 cubic feet. You can wash a king-size comforter (any machine over 4.5 cubic feet can) or do more laundry in one load. That’s handy because the wash time is a lengthy 105 minutes using the normal wash/heavy-soil setting. The TurboWash option trims time and, in our tests, didn’t affect cleaning. The washer is WiFi-enabled, so you can start it using your smartphone.
Matching dryer: LG DLEX9000V (electric) and LG DLGX9001V (gas). Note: These models cannot be stacked.

Samsung WF50K7500AW
The deal:
$999 at Best BuyHome Depot, JCPenney, and Lowe’s
Savings: Up to $300
This price matches what it sold for around Black Friday. The Samsung WF50K7500AW is among the gentlest on fabrics of the 40-plus front-loaders tested, earning an Excellent rating in this test. And while it takes 100 minutes to do a load, the Super Speed setting cuts time without sacrificing performance, according to our tests. Capacity is 5 cubic feet. This washer is WiFi-enabled.
Matching dryer: Samsung DV50K7500EW (electric) and Samsung DV50K7500GW (gas).
