Scam alert: Beware of "free" iPads

Consumer Reports News: April 13, 2010 10:38 AM

    Source: TestItAndKeepIt.com, now defunct.
The Better Business Bureau and other watchdogs are warning consumers to be wary of scams taking advantage of consumer interest in the Apple iPad.

So far, scams have take the form of e-mails and a Facebook page offering a free iPad in return for testing it. One offer asked respondents provide their e-mail address and password (see the screen shot from that site  at right), while another tried to sign them up for a cell phone service. Yet another scam offered an iPad if you buy something else and disclose your credit card number.

More details on these scams are at Sophos, McAfee, and GeekSugar.com.

I found some iPads for sale on eBay, but they were overpriced. For example, a 64GB 3G model, which costs $829 from Apple (and which Apple says it won’t ship until late April) had been bid up to $910. Another seller was asking $649 a 16GB Wi-Fi model, which Apple sells for $499 and will ship free in 5 to 7 business days.

If you’re looking for an iPad, right now it’s best to stick with Apple or an authorized dealer like Best Buy.
