About This Brand

Hoover introduced its first vacuum in 1907 and has established itself as one of the most recognizable brands in America. More recently, Hoover was bought from Whirlpool by TTI Floor Care, the owners of Dirt Devil. Hoover sells a wide variety of uprights at mass-market retailers, with models ranging from as little as $50 to $300. It also makes hand and stick vacuums, canister models (about $80 to $300), deep cleaners, central vacuums, bare-floor cleaners, and an outdoor sweeper, though the company is best known for its uprights.

Poor Design
Short Power Cord

Comment:
Like other reviews, my unit was unreliable. In fact, it broke the 1st day. The surface selector (which stops the brush from rotating for use on bare floors) stopped engaging.

Also noted in other reviews, the air-brush tool attachment is weakly attached to the handle. It fell off after the 1st bump with furniture. Not a big deal if you can live with leaving it in the closet until you need it. Very poor design on the tool holder attaching it to the handle.

Beyond the un-reliability, the performance was very poor. While airflow from the tool was great, vacuuming on no-pile/low-pile rugs was disappointing at best. Pick up required several passes. The unit is so low to the rug that it would just push around anything more than a hair height (like a bit of food from my toddler). When trying to vacuum the edge of a rug (where it drops to the bare floor), it was ineffective because of the difference in height.

Poor results. This is my first purchase based on a consumer reports where I have been disappointed. I have returned it and will not buy another.

Comment:
Initially, it worked GREAT, espec for pet hair, but in less than 1 year, the motor would overheat and stop working altogether. Had to let vacuum stand and wait anywhere from 1/2 to 1 hr to get it to work again. Small bag-less container that kept dirt/dust stuck--wouldn't come out easily--needed to insert a utensil to clean out container after every single time it got full. Short tubing to use for other attachments. Would NOT buy again!

Comment:
I use the Hoover upright to vacuum my wall to wall carpets and large throw rugs. It works well for that purpose. I find it to be relatively light and easy to handle for an upright. It works fairly well on tile but my canister vacuum is still much easier to handle on bare floors.

I recommend the Hoover upright for carpeted areas and for those that prefer to own only one vacuum and have primarily carpeted floors.
