BMW X5

BMW X5
Tested version: 3.0si 6-cyl (shown)
CR Model Summary
The redesigned X5 is longer than its predecessor and features an optional third-row seat. Despite the redesign, the ride remains stiff and choppy, particularly at low speeds. Handling is capable and secure, and the steering has good feedback. Both engines deliver ample acceleration. The smooth transmission is quick to respond, but the complicated shifter is frustrating, and the iDrive driver-interaction system has complicated the controls. The interior is impeccably trimmed, and the front- and second-row seats are very comfortable. The third-row seat is small and best only for children. Reliability of the new model has been average. A diesel engine arrives for 2009.
Highs
Handling, smooth powertrain, front-seat comfort, fit and finish.
Lows
Ride, unintuitive controls and shifter, tiny third-row seat, delay for rear camera, two-step ignition procedure.
