Experts at our National Testing and Research Center tested 80 models in cooktops & wall ovens to see which ones perform best.

We look for:

Overall score
Overall score reflects cooktop performance at high and low heat, as well as safety issues such as surface temperature. The displayed score is out of a total of 100 points.
High heat
Reflects how quickly the highest-powered element heated water to near-boiling.
Low heat
Reflects how well the lowest-powered element melted and held chocolate without scorching and how the most powerful element, set to low, held tomato sauce below a boil.

Electric cooktops (30)

All of the electric cooktops performed well overall. Like gas cooktops, electric smoothtop models can't match the quick heating and instant response of induction models. But as the price column shows, induction cooktops typically are more expensive. For many induction models, you can't use all the induction elements on high power at once, and some induction cooktops make a slight humming sound when in use. Induction cooktops also require magnetic cookware made of cast iron or enameled steel. Some stainless-steel cookware will work; aluminum or copper will not.

Wall ovens (26)

Electric wall ovens are another appliance where price can have little to do with performance. Note that most wall ovens are available with stainless-steel trim (typically $100 to $300 extra).

Gas cooktops (24)

You'll find many competent gas cooktops to choose from. But as the scores show, our results differed significantly among them. We also found that paying more doesn't guarantee a better cooktop. Indeed, several capable gas cooktops we tested cost well below $1,000, though they typically sacrifice style and convenience features.

As with electric cooktops, gas models can't match the quick heating and instant response of induction models. But as the price columns show, induction cooktops cost more.
