Dehumidifiers

What's behind our dehumidifier Ratings?

Experts at our National Testing and Research Center tested 18 models in dehumidifiers to see which ones perform best.
We look for:
  • Overall score
Overall score is based mostly on water removal, response, efficiency, and noise. Displayed scores are rounded; models are listed in order of precise overall score.
  • Water removal
Water removal measures pints per day removed under 80º F and 60 percent relative humidity as well as 70º F and 70 percent relative humidity. Models closest to claimed removal scored higher.
  • Humidistat accuracy
Humidistat accuracy is how closely humidistats came to keeping the humidity levels we set for them in our test chamber.
  • Energy efficiency
Energy efficiency measures kWh needed to remove a pint of water from the air; the fewer the kilowatts, the higher the score.
  • Noise
Noise denotes loudness at the highest setting, measured in decibels. We also measured ability to run on low voltage and restart after a simulated blackout; models that didn't automatically restart are footnoted.
  • Cool room performance
Cool room performance measures pints of water removed and watts needed to remove this water when the dehumidifier is used in a room that is 50 degrees F and 60% relative humidity.

Dehumidifiers use a fan to pull air over two sets of refrigerant-filled coils, one cool and the other warm, wringing out moisture along the way. Dehumidifiers vary according to how many pints of moisture they can remove in 24 hours. If you're looking for information about dehumidifiers, Consumer Reports is your best resource. Dehumidifier buying guide

Dehumidifiers use a fan to pull air over two sets of refrigerant-filled coils, which pull moisture from the air and drip it into a tank. All the models we evaluated in our test chamber performed at least adequately overall. But some came much closer than others to the humidity levels we set on the humidistat. And some used less energy or ran more quietly. We've also found that some models handle simulated power outages better than others.
