Dishwasher reviews

Consumer Reports is the only place to find unbiased, independent dishwasher reviews. Looking for special dishwasher features such as a third rack or hidden controls? Should you get a standard dishwasher or a drawer dishwasher? What about a stainless steel interior?

Our experts at the Consumer Reports National Testing and Research Center have evaluated nearly 200 current dishwasher models at our on-site dishwasher testing labs. Our reviews will provide you with recommended dishwasher Ratings, where you will find the exact numerical score our experts have assigned to each of the five tested review criteria that make up our dishwasher reviews: washing, energy use, noise, ease of use, and dishwasher cycle time.

Our reviews also provide dishwasher reliability Ratings—based on input from thousands of actual dishwasher users—for such major brands as Bosch, Whirlpool, GE, Miele, Kenmore, Samsung, KitchenAid, and many others. Our dishwasher review pages also include a dishwasher selector, where you can input brand, category, and price to narrow down the right dishwasher model for your needs.

After reading the dishwasher reviews, you can compare models, review our list of dishwasher  features and specifications, read user reviews, and submit your own review.  If you prefer visual information, you can watch our dishwasher video buying guide.

What's behind our dishwasher Ratings?

Experts at our National Testing and Research Center tested 172 models in dishwashers to see which ones perform best.
We look for:
  • Overall score
Based mainly on washing, it also factors in noise, energy and water use, loading, and more. The displayed score is out of a total of 100 points.
  • Washing
Assessed by running the normal or equivalent cycle to clean a full load--10 place settings of very dirty dishes that were scraped but not rinsed. We examine the dishes and glassware for residual food after cleaning.
  • Drying
Drying is our assessment of how thoroughly a model dries plastic items, the most stubborn in any load. We evaluate drying performance using the same cycle we use for our Washing test. As directed by manufacturers, we use rinse aid in every load.
  • Energy use
For a normal cycle. The largest portion is needed for heating water, both at the water heater and in the machine.
  • Noise
Judged during fill, wash, and drain, mainly by a listening panel.
  • Ease of use
Considers convenience of controls, the ability to hold extra place settings and oversized items such as platters up to 13-1/2 in. long and Pilsner-type glasses up to 10 in. high.
  • Cycle time
Based on running the normal or equivalent cycle to clean a full load with high temperature options selected (if available).
