2027 Model Redesign Year
The three-row GLS serves as the SUV equivalent to Mercedes-Benz's top-tier S-Class sedan, and its 2027 update comes with enough creature comforts and high-tech features to justify its flagship status. Flashy updates include a standard trio of 12.3-inch screens that span the dashboard, a massive 10.8-square-foot panoramic glass sunroof, air suspension that uses cloud data to automatically adjust to compensate for bumps ahead, and enough three-pointed Mercedes star logos on the GLS's exterior to form a galaxy. Two powertrains carry over from the outgoing GLS, both of which incorporate a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and have been updated to be smoother, more responsive, and quieter: a 375-hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine in the GLS 450 and a 530-hp turbocharged V8 in the GLS 580.

2026

2020 Model Redesign Year
The GLS is a very functional three-row SUV that exudes luxury, thanks to a gorgeous interior. The standard 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder engine provides plenty of smooth and effortless power. An even more powerful turbo V8 is available. The ride is composed, and handling is responsive for such a large luxury coach. All the seats are first-rate, and the interior can be configured for either six or seven passengers. Unlike in most competitors, the third-row seat is relatively roomy.
However, the infotainment system is distracting to use when driving because many common tasks require a few steps. Plus, when using the steering wheel controls, it's easy to inadvertently change a display or an audio selection.

2020-Present

2020 Model Redesign Year
The new for 2020 GLS is a very functional three-row SUV that exudes luxury with its gorgeous interior. The standard 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo provides plenty of smooth and effortless power. However, the infotainment system is overly distracting because many common tasks require a few steps. Using steering-wheel controls too easily ends up changing a display or audio selection. Standard safety features include forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking.

2017-2019

2017 Model Redesign Year
Mercedes' seven-passenger SUV is freshened for the 2017 model year, with revised interior and exterior styling, a nine-speed automatic, an upgraded air suspension, and the addition of the current--and more complex--Mercedes-Benz infotainment system. Our last tested diesel GL was plush and quiet, with supportive seats and a third-row seat that was roomy enough for adults. It had a steady and comfortable ride, but the GL proved very clumsy when pushed to its handling limits. Engines include a 362-hp, 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6; and a 4.7-liter V8 that puts out 449 hp. The flagship AMG GLS63 churns out 577 hp. Available safety equipment includes cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, and lane-keeping assist.
