The big Avalon's 2013 redesign brought somewhat mixed results. It's still a very good car, with a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped interior. But the excellent ride of the old version has been stiffened too much on models with the 18-inch wheel package. Handling, long a sore point, has been sharpened, and the modernized styling is welcomed. The standard 268-hp V6 is punchy and is teamed with a smooth six-speed automatic. Fuel economy is a commendable 24 mpg overall. The controls have been made more complicated, with flush-mounted buttons that are easy to inadvertently activate, and the limo-like rear seat has lost some room. Models with the optional navigation system get distance-sensing cruise control.
