Two classes of medicines we have evaluated are used to treat people with bipolar disorder (also called manic depression).  It is not uncommon for doctors and psychiatrists to prescribe more than one type of drug to treat a person with bipolar disorder, especially if their symptoms are not relieved with one type of drug.
