Atomi has recalled about 99,400 smart heaters because the units can turn on without user input, potentially resulting in fire and burn hazards.

Atomi has received one report of the heater turning on without the user switching it on, but no reports of injuries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Consumer Reports has tested one of the recalled smart heaters, the Atomi AT1481. Our engineers did not observe any instances in which the heater turned on without input, but it’s worth noting that this model earned the lowest score possible in our tests of surface temperatures, meaning that some spots in our tests got hot enough to burn a user.

Details of the Atomi Smart Heater Recall

The recall: About 99,400 smart heaters, sold under seven model numbers and styles. Additionally, about 10,700 heaters were sold in Canada. The recall applies to four tower heaters, two tabletop heaters, and a wall heater. The recall includes heaters with the following names and model numbers:

    • Atomi Smart Tower Heater AT1323
    • Atomi Smart Tower Heater AT1481
    • Atomi Smart Tower Heater AT1520
    • Atomi Smart Tower Heater AT1632
    • Atomi Smart Tabletop Heater AT1482
    • Atomi Smart Tabletop Heater AT1521
    • Atomi Smart Wall Heater AT1635

The risk: The smart space heaters can turn on without user input, posing fire and burn hazards.

Incidents/injuries: Atomi has received one report of a heater turning on but no reports of injuries.

Where and when sold: Amazon, Ace Hardware, Atomiusa.com, Best Buy, BJʼs Wholesale Club, Costco, Hammacher Schlemmer, Home Depot, Lowes.com, Menards, Sam’s Club, and Walmart nationwide from October 2019 through April 2024 for $80 to $150.

The remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using a recalled heater, unplug the unit, and follow Atomi’s instructions to receive a full refund. As part of the recall-registration process, consumers with a recalled Atomi heater will be asked to cut the unplugged unit’s power cord and upload photographs of the cut cord and the manufacturer’s label on the underside of their unit.

Contact information: Call Atomi at 888-770-7140 or go to the Atomi recall page.

Report a defective product: Call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772 or go to SaferProducts.gov.
