Empower Brands has issued a recall of about 2 million Black+Decker garment steamers because of reports of burn injuries, several of which were second-degree burns. The recall is an expansion of a November 2022 recall.

Consumers should stop using the Model HGS011 Easy Garment Steamers immediately and contact Empower Brands for a refund, according to the recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Here are more details below of what you should know.

Details About the Black+Decker Garment Steamer Recall

The recall: All Black+Decker Model HGS011 Easy Garment Steamers are being recalled—a total of around 2 million units, including 518,500 units that were recalled in November 2022 also because of burn hazards. During the earlier recall, consumers were advised to contact Empower Brands to receive a free replacement upper assembly to repair their steamer.

The recalled model numbers are HGS011F, HGS011S, HGS011, and HGS011T. The steamers are sold in a variety of colors.

The brand name Black+Decker will be located at the base of the steamer. If you’re unsure which model you have, look for a model number on the bottom of the steamer and on product packaging.

“It is astounding that today’s recall includes more than 1 million additional units compared to the original recall in November 2022, and only now can people get a full refund,” says Oriene Shin, policy counsel for CR.

“People were at risk of potentially serious burns for years, and the company did far too little to protect them. Companies must do more to ensure that recalls are done right the first time, including by offering full refunds from the beginning,” Shin adds.

    MORE ON RECALLS

The risk: The steamers can expel, spray, or leak hot water while they’re being used and cause serious burn injuries.

Incidents/injuries: There have been 317 reports of hot water expelling from the steamers since their recall in November 2022. These include 82 reports of burn injuries, seven of which were second-degree burns. Ninety-four of these incident reports, including 19 burn injuries, involved steamers that were either repaired in the original recall or models that featured the updated design.

Where sold and when: The steamers were sold in stores and online by Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Walmart, and other retailers nationwide, and also on the Black + Decker website. They were sold from June 2021 through February 2024 for $14 to $23.

The remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the Black+Decker Model HGS011 Easy Garment Steamers and contact Empower Brands to receive a full refund. This includes anyone who received a replacement upper assembly in the November 2022 recall.

Contact information: Call Empower Brands at 800-990-5298 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or send an email to hgsrecall@brandprotectplus.com. For more information or to register for a refund, go to prodprotect.com/recall or the Black+Decker recall page.
