Empower Brands Recalls More Than 300,000 Air Fryers Due to Burn Hazard

A plastic connector that joins the fryer's two baskets can break and cause burns

Empower Brands has recalled more than 300,000 air fryers because of a problem with a U-Channel connector that combines the two fry baskets found in these dual-basket models. The connector can break as you’re using it and pose a burn hazard. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall notice, there have been 41 reports of the air fryer breaking during use, and three reports of burns. Two of the company’s dual-basket PowerXL air fryer models are involved in the recall.

    MORE ON AIR FRYERS

Consumer Reports has not evaluated the two recalled models. Our air-fryer ratings do include two PowerXL models that have not been recalled— the PowerXL Vortex PAF-7QB Air Fryer and the PowerXL HF-509DT Air Fryer—and our testers have not observed any particular problems with these models in the course of their evaluation. Neither of the models we’ve tested feature dual baskets or have the U-Channel connector that has posed a problem in the recalled models.

Details of the Empower Brands Air-Fryer Recall

The recall: About 319,000 units sold from August 2021 through October 2023. The Empower Brands air-fryer models recalled are the 10-quart PowerXL DUAF-10 Vortex Dual-Basket Air Fryer and the 9-quart PowerXL DUAF-005 Vortex Dual-Basket Air Fryer. These models were sold in black or cinnamon color. The products have a silver label on the front that says “PowerXL,” as well as a white label on the bottom or the power cord, which lists the model number.

The risk: The U-Channel connector that connects the air fryer’s two fry baskets can break, posing a burn hazard.

Incidents/injuries: The firm has received 41 reports of the product breaking during use, including three reports of burns.

Where and when sold: Kohl’s, Target, Walmart, and other stores nationwide, and online at Kohl’s, Target, Walmart, and other websites from August 2021 through October 2023.

The remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled air fryers and contact Empower Brands to receive a full refund.
