    Source: GE Appliances

GE has recalled roughly 11,000 electric smoothtop cooktops that pose a burn risk to consumers. Certain JP3030 cooktops made in 2022 have defective knob components, allowing individual elements to remain on, even when the knob is turned to the off position. GE has received 83 reports of a burner staying on, or failing to regulate heat properly. It has not received any reports of injury, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall notice.

Consumer Reports has tested one version of this cooktop, the GE JP3030DJBB, but our experts did not experience any problem with the knobs during the course of our testing.

Details of the GE Cooktop Recall

The recall: The recall involves about 11,000 GE electric smoothtop cooktops with model number JP3030. Only certain units, made between July and September 2022 are affected. The recall applies only to certain UPCs and serial numbers, both of which can be found on the underside of the cooktop, near the left front burner. The recall includes models with the following UPCs and serial numbers:

    UPC Codes
    084691809609
    084691809074
    084691809081

    Serial Numbers
    LT081195Q – LT081286Q
    LT015466Q – LT015467Q
    LT048419Q – LT048420Q
    LT073851Q
    LT129159Q – LT129183Q
    LT148064Q – LT148068Q
    LT118335Q

The risk: A misaligned burner knob stem or damaged knob stem components can cause individual burners to remain on, even when the knob is turned to the off position.

Incidents/injuries: There have been 83 reports about the issue, but no injuries have been noted.

Where and when sold: Major home improvement and appliance stores nationwide, including Best Buy, Home Depot, and Lowe’s, from July 2022 through 2023 for $1,110 to $1,220.

The remedy: Owners can contact GE Appliances to arrange for free installation of a replacement burner knob assembly. When not in use, turn the unit off at the circuit breaker. Do not leave flammable materials or empty cookware on or near the cooktop. In the affected units, the burner can remain on following use even after being turned to the off position. In this case, the “On” indicator light will not be illuminated, but the “Hot Cooktop” light corresponding to the burner will remain illuminated until power to the cooktop is turned off at the breaker switch.

Contact information: Call GE Appliances toll-free at 877-261-1509 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the company’s dedicated recall page.

Report a defective product: Call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772 or go to SaferProducts.gov.
