ZLine Gas-Range Recall Now Offers Refunds or Replacements to Consumers
A repair performed under the recall failed to stop carbon monoxide leaks in the ovens of affected models
ZLine has introduced new options for consumers impacted by its gas range recall. If you have one of the recalled ranges, you may be eligible for a refund or replacement.
Previously, consumers received a repair option only. The move comes after the company received more than 100 complaints that repairs failed to stop the carbon monoxide leaks that prompted the initial recall in December of 2022.
That initial recall, which included only 30- and 36-inch models, was expanded in January of 2023 to include 48-inch models as well. Any of the impacted models in the recall can emit dangerous levels of carbon monoxide when the oven is used, posing a serious risk of injury or even death. The expansion brought the total number of recalled Zline gas ranges to about 30,000.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that kills dozens of people each year in the U.S. One of the easiest ways to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning is to install a carbon monoxide detector.
To date, ZLine has received 44 reports of carbon monoxide emissions, including three incidents in which people sought medical attention as a result, according to an updated release from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. They have also received 131 reports of ranges continuing to emit carbon monoxide from the oven, even after the models received repairs under the initial recall.
Consumer Reports has not tested any of the recalled models but has tested other ZLine ranges.
CR has also done its own gas range emissions testing on other models. While our testing did find potentially worrisome levels of nitrogen oxides, our experts were not concerned by carbon monoxide emissions produced by any of the ranges we tested. ZLine ranges were not part of that testing.
Details of the ZLine Gas Range Recall
The recall: About 30,000 ZLine gas ranges sold at a variety of online and walk-in retailers nationwide. The recall involves 30-, 36-, and 48-inch ranges with the following model numbers: RG30, RGS-30, RGB-30, RG36, RGS-36, RGB-36, RG48, RGS-48, and RGB-48. The ranges have a number of different finishes. The ZLine logo is printed at the bottom of the door, and the model number can be found on a label on the back of the range. (For ranges purchased after 2020, the model number is also on a label underneath the right side of the range top, visible when the door is opened.)
The risk: The oven in the range can emit dangerous levels of carbon monoxide during use, posing a risk of injury or death. In some cases, the risk exists even after a repair has been completed by the company.
Incidents/injuries: ZLine has received 44 reports of carbon monoxide emissions, including three reports of people seeking medical attention. It has also received 131 reports of ranges continuing to emit carbon monoxide after a repair was performed.
Where and when sold: Best Buy, Lowe’s, Home Depot, and The Range Hood Store, and online at bestbuy.com, build.com, costco.com, homedepot.com, therangehoodstore.com, overstock.com, and wayfair.com. The gas ranges were sold from February 2019 through December 2022 for between $2,300 and $6,900.
The remedy: If your range is one of the recalled models, stop using the oven immediately and contact ZLine to discuss your options, which may now include refund or replacement in addition to repair.
Consumers who have already received a repair as part of the recall are being contacted by ZLine directly to schedule an inspection, refund, or replacement. Consumers can still use the burners on top of the range, but should not use the ovens under any circumstances, even if a repair has been performed. Consumers should only use their ovens once the repair is completed and the company has inspected the repair.
