Traditionally, carpet cleaning appliances are large, often heavy, and need to be plugged into power to work. Hoover’s latest Onepwr device, a cordless carpet cleaner the brand is calling the first in the world of its kind, is looking to change one of those things. The Hoover Onepwr battery system is a suite of cordless appliances that work with the same rechargeable battery packs. The batteries are interchangeable, so if your Onepwr stick vacuum runs out of juice, you can grab the battery from your handheld vacuum while the first battery pack recharges.

    More on Floor Cleaning

Theoretically, if you have a few extra batteries charged at all times, you can have a carpet cleaner with a limitless run time. Not having to worry about cleaning too far from a power outlet to keep your carpet cleaner plugged in is helpful too. The question is: Does this cordless carpet cleaner deliver on cleaning?

We purchased a Hoover Onepwr SmartWash Cordless Carpet Cleaner to try for ourselves. In our labs, we evaluated the cordless carpet cleaner using an amended version of our formal carpet cleaner testing. After one round of our carpet cleaning and water retention tests plus several hours of poking and prodding, I have some thoughts.

    What’s in the Box?

The Hoover Onepwr SmartWash Cordless Carpet Cleaner costs $480 on the manufacturer’s site. It has two separate tanks for its clean and dirty water. There are two brush rolls included with the carpet cleaner—one deep-clean brush roll for low pile carpets and a gentle-clean brush roll for delicate or high-pile carpets. We used the deep-clean brush roll during all our evaluations. A charger for the 8-amp-hour battery and a 6-ounce bottle of Hoover Oxy Permanent Stain Remover round out the list of items included with the carpet cleaner.
