    Best Cookie Cutters

We baked a lot of holiday cookies made with cookie cutters from Sur La Table, Williams Sonoma, and Wilton to find out which ones helped us make our best holiday cookies yet

Good cookie cutters can help make your cookies even more beautiful by creating a well-defined cookie base for the icing decorations (if that's your vibe).

I’ve referred to a development in my town as the “cookie-cutter” neighborhood for the homes’ architectural uniformity—you know, McMansion after McMansion after McMansion—but after this product evaluation, it may be time for me to retire that phrase. All actual cookie cutters are not created equal.

They can be made with various materials—plastic, stainless steel, tin, and copper— and they range in price depending on where you shop. Cookie cutters available at grocery stores or on Amazon will lean to the affordable side, while a set from Sur La Table or Williams Sonoma will cost more.

If cookie baking is your kind of sport you know that some cutters can be flimsier than others, some don’t retain their shape over time, and certain kinds don’t cut edges as sharply as you want them to. With December being a big cookie-baking month, you may be willing to shell out more cash for a set of cookie cutters that produce sharp shapes, are easy to clean after use, and are strong enough to hold up through this holiday season and well beyond.

But does a more expensive cookie cutter give you all that and more? I hit my kitchen with three different brands of cookie cutters—at low, medium, and high price points—and several tubes of Pillsbury sugar cookie dough, on a mission to find out.
