Compared with power tools and blenders, dehumidifiers are kind of quiet. But they often run all day and all night. And, after several hours, even a relatively silent appliance can drive you to distraction, especially when you’re trying to sleep.
That’s why Consumer Reports’ technicians evaluate every dehumidifier we test for noise, cranking up each model to its highest fan and moisture-removal settings, then placing a sound pressure meter on a tripod 3 feet in front of the dehumidifier and 4 feet off the floor, simulating what the unit might sound like if you’re sitting in a room with it.
The noisiest dehumidifiers in our tests approach 70 dB, which is about as loud as a shower. The quietest models reach around 50 dB, which is about as quiet as a refrigerator.
Below are six models that are very quiet, earn high scores in our ratings for performance, and are currently available from at least one retailer. Several high-scoring models we tested from brands such as TCL, Danby, hOmeLabs, and Honeywell don’t appear to be in stock or are discontinued at this time. CR members can still access detailed test results of those models in our dehumidifier ratings, and we’ll update this article once availability changes. The list below is organized alphabetically by capacity, or how much water the dehumidifier can remove from the air.
For more information on these and other models we’ve tested, check out our full dehumidifier ratings and read CR’s dehumidifier buying guide. Once you find a model that meets your needs, here’s how to get the most out of your dehumidifier.
We’ve seen some availability issues recently with highly rated Honeywell dehumidifiers, but we’ve found the large-capacity Honeywell TPFIT50AWK available from several retailers. This model not only earns our top score for quiet operation but also maxes out on energy efficiency and delivers on its promise to remove up to 50 points per day. (It’s worth mentioning that its tank holds only 15 pints, so you might want to use the included drain hose.) Its brand reliability score is also tops, though owner satisfaction is middling.
The Midea MAD50PS1AWBL is fairly quiet for a large-capacity model (large-capacity models, as a rule, tend to be louder than their smaller siblings). According to our water removal tests, this model is decent at meeting its claim of removing 50 pints of water from the air per day and excels at energy efficiency compared with other dehumidifiers of this capacity. Midea dehumidifiers receive a favorable rating for reliability and a midlevel rating for owner satisfaction in our member surveys.
Our testers find the medium-capacity Midea MAD35S1QWT to be whisper-quiet. But just as important, it earns the highest rating score of any model in our three size categories. This top performer, which can remove 35 pints of moisture a day from the air, earns top scores for energy efficiency and convenience. It features a digital display, frost control, a built-in water pump, an auto-restart feature, and a timer.
If you’re looking for a quiet dehumidifier that’s also budget-friendly, look no further than the Midea MAD35C1AWS. For around $200, you’re getting a model that performed well in our water removal tests and excelled in energy efficiency. It doesn’t come with a drain hose, but the 14-pint water tank is large for its capacity, so you won’t have to empty the dehumidifier frequently. The model has an auto-defrost function and is also able to automatically restart if the power goes out while the dehumidifier is running.
If silence is your main consideration, the Midea MAD20S1QWT is simply the quietest dehumidifier in our tests. It also earns standout ratings for water removal, convenience, and humidistat accuracy in CR’s lab tests. It’s relatively energy-efficient, comes with a drain hose, and has some nice features, including a timer and an auto-restart that turns the machine back on and restores it to its prior settings after a power outage.
The TCL W25D92 is one of the quietest models among the small-capacity dehumidifiers we test. It’s also Energy Star certified and earns near-top-level marks in energy efficiency in our tests. The dehumidifier can remove 25 pints of moisture from the air per day, and it does a solid job meeting its claim. As a brand, TCL dehumidifiers earn very good ratings in owner satisfaction and decent ratings in owner satisfaction.
