Sometimes floors seem to get dirty in the blink of an eye. Maybe you’ve tracked dirt into your living room or forgotten to clean up a spill that’s now hardened on your kitchen tiles. These are times when a floor cleaner can come in handy to make your floors shiny and bright again.

    MORE ON FLOOR CLEANING

If you have different types of flooring in your home, you’ll want a multi-surface floor cleaner that’s safe to use on a variety of flooring materials. Not all multi-surface floor cleaners, however, are equally strong at removing dirt and grime. To find the best products, we tested popular cleaners on three common floor types—hardwood, laminate, and ceramic tile—and judged them on how effectively they get rid of scuff marks and messes such as dried tomato soup and mustard.

The multi-surface floor cleaners that performed best in our testing are those that cleaned well on all three floor types. We recommend two cleaners in particular for their strength and versatility, as we’ll discuss below. For more detailed performance results on all the products we tested, you can consult our complete ratings of multi-surface floor cleaners. And if you’re interested in floor cleaners that are the best at cleaning hardwood floors in particular, check out the three best hardwood floor cleaners we tried.

Before you try any floor cleaner in your home, look at the product’s label to make sure that it’s appropriate for the surface you intend to use it on. You should also check the care guidelines from your flooring manufacturer. And as a rule, if you’re using a new cleaner, it’s safer to try the product in a small, inconspicuous area of the floor first before applying it more broadly.

    How We Test Floor Cleaners

To test the multi-surface floor cleaners, we created tough messes on three different floor types: hardwood, laminate, and ceramic tile. On each of these floors, we applied a measured amount of mustard and concentrated tomato soup and let it dry out so that it was more difficult to clean. We also used black crayons on the floor surface to replicate the appearance of scuff marks.

Our testers then applied a specific amount of cleaner to the floors and scrubbed the messes with a mop. The cleaner’s efficacy was judged by how effectively it removed the mustard, tomato soup, and scuff marks from the floors after 100 passes with the mop. In our evaluations, some cleaners were able to clear away the grime before the 100-pass mark, while others fell short at cleaning up the mess, even after we scrubbed it 100 times.
