The tranmitter is a stand alone thermometer but the buttons aren't clearly marked. PROS: Has ability to take two temperatures at one time (comes with two probes) and can use as a stand alone thermometer without the iphone. Large red LED digits on black background are easy to read. Has over a dozen programmable meat settings*. Fairly easy to wirelessly connect and set safe meat presets if familiar with iphone and iphone Apps. CONS: The transmitter buttons are not clearly marked so toggling between two temperature probes and programming a custom temperature alert (which must be done on the unit) is not intuitive. For wireless capability, you can only use with Apple products (iphone, ipad and ipod - need to check compatability of your specific device).
