Love to bake but don’t have the dough or the space for a stand mixer? A highly capable hand mixer can perform many of the same tasks for a fraction of the cost. Some new models even come with handy storage cases for attachments, so they won’t wind up lost in the far corners of your utensil drawer.
“Hand mixers are best at light-duty jobs like whipping cream,” says Ginny Lui, who oversees mixer testing for Consumer Reports. But some models are equipped with dough hooks to handle heavy-duty tasks like mixing bread dough.
In our labs, we time how fast a hand mixer can whip heavy cream. The quickest models produce firm peaks in 3 minutes or less. We also judge how well a hand mixer stands up to the tougher challenge of mixing chocolate chip cookie dough, and how quietly it operates.
For details on how all the hand and stand mixers in Consumer Reports’ tests perform, see our full mixer ratings. For information on the features of both types of mixers, read our mixer buying guide. And you can find out which stand mixers excelled in our tests.
Below, listed in alphabetical order, are the top five hand mixers from our tests. Prices on some models have recently increased, probably due to new tariffs on imported parts, says Stacy Canova-Turner, CR’s market analyst covering mixers. “Some of the American companies, like KitchenAid, assemble certain models in the U.S. but get their components from China or other sources overseas,” she says.
The Breville Handy Mix Scraper BHM800SILUSC is a champ at mixing cookie dough and receives top marks for whipping cream quickly. It’s also convenient, meaning that its controls are easy to use and it’s easy to change settings and swap out the beaters. Although it’s one of the pricier models in CR’s hand mixer ratings, it comes with a lot of bells and whistles, including a digital display, a light for your work area, a timer, dough hooks, and a storage case.
In addition to its flashy chrome design, the Dualit Professional 88520 4 Speed stands out for having a handy retractable cord, which can mean a little less clutter in your kitchen cabinet. This model shows very good performance in our whipping and mixing tests, and receives an excellent score for convenience. Along with regular flat beaters, it comes with a whisk and dough hooks. It receives only a middling score for noise, but that may not matter so much for quick jobs.
One of the lowest-priced hand mixers in our rating, this Hamilton Beach performs as well as some of the pricier models. Its scores were very good across our tests, including whipping time, mixing, convenience, and noise, making it a solid choice. It also stands out for being the only mixer on this list with a slow-start function to prevent batter spatter. This mixer comes with a storage case with interchangeable whisk and wire beaters.
The 7-speed KitchenAid Architect KHM7210 hand mixer showed very good performance in our cookie dough mixing test, delivering enough power to fold chocolate chips into stiff cookie dough. It also received a very good score in our whipping test, in which we time how quickly the mixer can whip up heavy cream. Our testers found this model’s controls easy to use, plus its wire beaters and whisk attachment were easy to insert, use, and remove.
The hallmark of Smeg appliances is their retro design, and this hand mixer is no exception. We tested the pale green version of the Smeg HMF01, but it also comes in several other pastel colors as well as red and black. That styling doesn’t come cheap, but the mixer performed well enough to earn our recommendation. Whipping time was top-notch, and although this mixer scored only average at mixing cookie dough, the end results were fine. Our testers also found the Smeg quiet and convenient to use.
