Our Place Dream Cooker vs. Instant Pot Pro: How Do They Compare?

We cooked five recipes in each device to find out if the fewer-functioned but beautiful Dream Cooker can compete with the tried-and-true—but less aesthetically pleasing—Instant Pot

Our Place Dream Cooker vs Instant Pot Pro
The Our Place Dream Cooker (above left with the Instant Pot Pro above right) is a beaut. But is it more style over substance?

In these overcomplicated times, there’s something to be said for simplicity. Today’s appliances perform so many functions that learning how to operate them can be dizzying.

About six years ago, I gifted myself a multi-cooker that pressure-cooks, slow cooks, sautés, makes yogurt and porridge, and more. The anxiety felt when trying to figure out how different functions work and how you’re supposed to react when an icon appears on the control panel is a real thing. It’s like receiving a startling weather alert on your cell phone. What do you do next?

Perhaps as an antidote to that, Our Place recently launched a Dream Cooker, a multi-cooker that is the opposite of the multi-functional Instant Pot in every way. It’s pretty, has a minimalist design, and performs far fewer functions (slow cook, pressure cook, sauté/sear, and keep warm). It’s made for the cook who really only wants to do slow cooking or pressure cooking—for the busy parent, like me, who has wondered about the “cake” button on my Instant Pot for years but never had enough time (brain power?) to figure out how to use it.

How We Evaluated the Dream Cooker and Instant Pot

To see how the two very different products compare I prepared the same foods using like-to-like functions provided by the Our Place Dream Cooker and the Instant Pot Pro 6 Qt. Over the course of a week I made plain rice, chili with meat, beans, edamame, and bone broth to determine ease of use and how the final dishes tasted compared with the same dishes prepared in an Instant Pot.

After tasting the dishes I prepared for this evaluation, I assessed both for ease of cleaning and whether the outside of the Dream Cooker stained easily, that’s an issue with the products that Our Place notes on its website: “The exterior coating on our nonstick products can stain, so we recommend safely wiping away any drips so they don’t burn onto the outside.” I can attest that wiping away spills quickly did the trick. But I also smeared some fatty marinara onto the outside and let it sit on the Dream Cooker for almost three hours. A quick wipe with warm water and a sponge removed it easily.

Our Place recommends wiping away food spills from the Dream Cooker right away, but we let marinara sit on our device for a few hours, and it wiped away easily without leaving a stain. We suspect that Dream Cookers in a lighter color might not be as stain resistant as our Blue Salt model.

There were some very subtle differences in taste as you’ll see from my comparison, but there were more glaring differences in use and functionality. Here’s a breakdown of how each dish turned out, plus details on how easy the pots were to program and clean.
