A range is the centerpiece of many kitchens, and in addition to baking, broiling, simmering, and performing other cooking tasks with precision, you want it to work reliably, every time you need it. Year after year.

But there are big differences from one brand to another. That’s one conclusion from CR’s newest range reliability survey, in which members told us about their experiences with 55,045 ranges purchased new between 2016 and 2026.

The survey, which we conduct yearly, asks whether a CR member’s range had developed problems or stopped working altogether. We used that data to formulate a predicted reliability rating for each brand. It reflects the likelihood that a new range from the brand will hold up over the first five years of ownership.

We also ask members how likely they are to recommend their range to family and friends, and that serves as the basis for each brand’s owner satisfaction rating.

The data is broken out by range type: induction, electric smoothtop, electric coil, gas, and pro-style.

If you’re shopping for a new range, you can start with our range buying guide to zero in on features and options that matter to you. Next, turn to our range ratings for the complete picture on how each model performs. And our brand-level reliability ratings–shown below–can provide important guidance on how likely you are to get years of trouble-free service from a new range.

To test stove and oven performance, CR's lab technicians bake over 2,400 cookies and 400 cakes annually, measure broiling temperature uniformity with thermocouples, slather on a proprietary goop to evaluate self-cleaning functionality, and test stovetop boil times and simmering ability.
