CPSC Warns Consumers to Immediately Stop Using 5in1 Rocker Bassinets Due to Safety Hazards

The bassinets, sold at various online retailers, violate several government safety standards

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is urging consumers to immediately stop using, disassemble, and discard the 5in1 Rocker Bassinet. The product is available at a variety of retailers, but has been pulled from Walmart.com. It may be available under the brand name Mastela or Ya Ya Ya.

Consumer Reports has not tested this bassinet. (Read our roundup of the best bassinets.)

Details of the 5in1 Rocker Bassinet Warning

The warning: According to the CPSC, the bassinet does not comply with several of the regulatory body’s safety requirements. The bassinet and its packaging lack critical information as well, such as when the product was manufactured, that the CPSC requires on baby products.

Sold in gray and pink or gray and teal, the bassinet may say “5-in-1 Rocker Bassinet” from a brand called Ya Ya Ya on the product packaging. It costs $99 when it was available for sale at walmart.com and has the UPC code 09331849600139. The CPSC notice does not provide details on specific injuries or deaths related to this product.

    More on Baby Safety

The risk: This rocker bassinet exposes babies to suffocation, strangulation, and fall hazards.

“These bassinets blatantly violate federal safety rules and medical recommendations for safe infant sleep,” says William Wallace, CR’s associate director of safety policy. “They never should have been sold, and they especially never should have been listed for sale on the websites of well-known brands like Walmart.”

The remedy: The importer, Rev Grace Import, refuses to cooperate with the CPSC on a recall and is not offering a remedy (such as a refund) to consumers.

The CPSC and Consumer Reports urge caregivers to practice safe sleep. Babies should sleep alone, on their backs, on a flat, firm surface—without blankets, bumpers, toys, or other items in their sleep space, because these can potentially suffocate the baby.

Babies should never sleep on surfaces that incline greater than 10 degrees, because these products can cause a baby’s airway to compress, leading to the baby’s suffocation. If your baby falls asleep in a soft or inclined environment such as a rocker, bouncer, or lounger, move them to their usual safe sleep space, like a crib, bassinet, or play yard.

“While today’s alert is important, it doesn’t mean that everyone who has one of these bassinets will learn that it is dangerous, stop using it, and throw it away,” Wallace says. “That’s why it’s critical for online platforms to step up their product safety vetting up front, and do much more to keep unsafe products like this from ever being sold in the first place.”

To report a defective product, call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772 or go to SaferProducts.gov.
