The company has received at least one report of a child losing part of a finger

UPPAbaby has recalled 14,400 Ridge jogging strollers because the design of the rear disc brakes poses the risk of a child getting a finger caught, leading to possible amputation. The company has received one report of a child, who was not in a stroller at the time, having the tip of a finger amputated.

We’ve seen this problem before. In 2009, Maclaren recalled more than 1 million strollers because of at least 12 reports of finger amputations. Graco recalled 1.5 million strollers the following year due to fingertip amputation and laceration hazards.

Consumer Reports hasn’t tested the UPPAbaby Ridge stroller, though we have tested other strollers from the brand.

    Recall Details

The recall: This recall involves all UPPAbaby all-terrain Ridge jogging strollers. The brand UPPAbaby is on the front of the stroller, and Ridge is on the side of the stroller frame. The serial numbers of the recalled products begin with 1401RDGUS and appear on the right side of the stroller frame above the rear wheel of the stroller. The model number 1401-RDG-US is printed on the left side of the stroller frame above the rear wheel.

    How many: About 14,400.

The risk: The stroller’s rear disc brakes have openings that can cause amputation or laceration if a nonoccupant child’s fingertip gets caught in the openings while the stroller is in use.

Incidents/injuries: UPPAbaby has received one reported incident, resulting in a fingertip amputation to a child who was not in the stroller while it was in use.

Where and when sold: The strollers were sold at BuyBuyBaby, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Pottery Barn Kids, and other children’s stores and specialty stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com from October 2021 through August 2022 for about $600.

The remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled strollers and contact UPPAbaby to receive free replacement brake discs for both wheels.

How to contact the manufacturer: Call UPPAbaby at 844-823-3132, send an email to support@uppababy.com, or submit your info on the company’s website.

How to report a defective product: Call the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s hotline at 800-638-2772 or go to SaferProducts.gov.
