Modular strollers, like the ones shown (clockwise from left) from Uppababy, Cybex, and Nuna, offer families more years of potential use, thanks to their built-in flexibility.

I have two kids, and by the time my younger one was ready for kindergarten, I had somehow amassed four strollers. There was the travel system that let us seamlessly transition from the car to the store, the lightweight stroller we used for travel, the jogging stroller I pushed around my neighborhood and on runs, and a behemoth double stroller I needed to tote both kids but could barely heave up a hill. In hindsight, four strollers is probably definitely three too many, and I wish I had gotten one really great modular stroller to rule them all.

    MORE ON STROLLERS

A modular stroller is designed to adapt with your changing family. In CR’s ratings, we define a modular stroller as one with a removable and/or reversible stroller seat, which allows you to reconfigure the setup and add or change out elements as needed. They’re also sometimes called combo strollers, or you might see them listed as single-to-double strollers or convertible strollers.

Many of the modular strollers in our tests can take you from bassinet to travel system to double stroller and beyond, with a simple switch-up of seats and accessories. One stroller in our ratings, the Baby Trend Morph, offers an impressive 25 orientations to choose from. The Uppababy Vista V3 can transport up to three riders, thanks to the addition of a second seat and a rumble board (a skateboard-like attachment where an older child can stand to ride).

Modular strollers are kind of like the Lego kits of the stroller world. But not all excel in our rigorous tests, which are designed to assess real-world usage. Can that engineering marvel still fold with all those extra attachments? And will you still have room in your trunk for groceries? We’re highlighting our top CR Recommended modular strollers below, along with expert insight into what makes them great. Because if one stroller is designed to do it all, it should do it well
