A stroller and infant car seat are two of the most essential big-ticket baby purchases you’ll make as you prepare for your little one’s arrival. As parents ourselves, we know that researching all the different stroller types and various features you can choose from is . . . a little overwhelming. Buying an infant car seat and stroller combo—aka a travel system—not only can simplify your choices but also is a smart move for seamless travel.

More on Strollers and Car Seats

A travel system is a stroller and a compatible infant car seat sold together as a bundle, no adapters needed. The car seat snaps into the stroller to serve as the seat, and it can also pop into a car seat base, making for easy transitions into and out of the car with your baby. For many parents, that’s an irresistible advantage. “With a travel system, you’re getting products that the manufacturer has designed to work together,” says Joan Muratore, the engineer who oversees CR’s stroller testing. Another bonus? A travel system lets you use your stroller with your newborn: Just click your infant car seat directly into the stroller and hit the road. (Most stroller seats are designed for babies over 6 months who can sit up unassisted.)

In CR’s lab, Muratore and her team of experienced product testers spend weeks putting strollers through comprehensive evaluations for safety, ease of use, and maneuverability. At our Auto Test Center, Emily A. Thomas, PhD, and Michael Bloch, both certified child passenger safety technicians, lead CR’s evaluations on car seats. Every infant car seat in our ratings has been tested for crash protection, fit to vehicle, and ease of use. Below, we highlight the best travel systems that earned top scores in our lab tests across both components, so you know you’re getting a standout stroller and an excellent car seat, too.
