There’s a lot more to accident coverage than low premiums

You probably don’t spend much time thinking about car insurance, but it is one of the most important facets of car ownership.

It protects you against major financial loss if you’re unfortunate enough to get into a collision, covering everything from property damage to bodily injury and beyond.

A good policy should give you all the resources you need to get your life back on track if you’ve damaged your car or injured yourself or others in a crash. A bad policy could leave you in the lurch when you’re at your most vulnerable. You don’t want to be chasing down payments from a hospital bed, or when you’re trying to get back on the road so that you can drive to work.

The best insurance policies take care of your financial needs and have a low premium, excellent customer service, proactive advice, and terms that are easy to understand.

More on Car Insurance

According to Consumer Reports’ survey of 56,396 members at the end of 2020, USAA—the insurer that provides coverage for military service members and their families—earns high scores in all these categories. It is closely followed by NJM Insurance and Amica. CR members were least satisfied with Liberty Mutual, Kemper, and Esurance.

From that survey, we are able to rate 47 insurance providers. Below we highlight the top performers. Complete ratings, including detailed factors such as premiums and customer service, are available to CR members.

Be sure to consult Consumer Reports’ car insurance buying guide before you buy insurance. Although it’s good to change carriers from time to time if you’re not satisfied with the one you have, experts recommend that you avoid jumping around too often because that can push up your premium.

My reporting has taken me everywhere from Baghdad, Iraq, to the Detroit auto show, along the U.S.-Mexico border and everywhere in between. If my travels have taught me anything, it's that stuff—consumer products—is at the center of daily life all over the world. That's why I'm so jazzed to be shining light on what works, what doesn't, and how people can enrich their lives by being smarter consumers. When I'm not reporting, I can usually be found at home with my family, at the beach surfing, or in my driveway, wrenching on my hot rod '74 Olds sedan.
