Ford Focus recalled

Ford is recalling 58,000 of its 2012-2014 and 2017 Focus cars because the software update they received as part of a prior recall was incomplete. That recall was meant to fix a problem with the gas tank that could cause a loss of power, inaccurate fuel gauge readings, or an indicator light signaling a malfunction has occurred, the automaker says.

If a vehicle loses power while driving, it could increase the risk of a crash. Ford says it is unaware of any reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue.

Faulty software may not respond as needed when a malfunctioning valve sticks open, Ford says. That can potentially deform the fuel tank. If that happens, owners may see a warning light illuminated on the dash, a gas gauge that's inaccurate or acting erratically, or a loss of power.

Ford recommends owners of affected vehicles keep their gas tanks at least half full until recall repairs are performed to prevent the vehicle from unexpectedly running out of gas.

The Details

Vehicles involved: 58,280 Focus cars, including:

  • 2012 and 2017 Focus vehicles with 2.0-liter GDI engines built from Oct. 7, 2010 through July 23, 2012, and from Aug. 24, 2016 through April 13, 2017.

  • 2013-14 Focus ST vehicles with 2.0-liter GTDI engines built from May 3, 2012 through Dec. 11, 2014.

The problem: A component in the emissions system can malfunction, causing a vacuum in the fuel system that may deform the plastic gas tank. Owners of affected vehicles may notice a check engine light, an “inaccurate or erratic” fuel gauge, or loss of power, Ford says.
