Honda Odyssey minivan

More than 536,000 Honda Odyssey minivans are being recalled over concerns that the backup camera may not display properly and that in freezing temperatures the power sliding-doors may not latch properly.

For vehicles affected by the backup camera recall, Honda says water may get into the backup camera’s mounting holes and enter the camera lens, which can cause a distorted, delayed, or inoperative backup camera display. A delayed or absent rear-view display when the minivan is in Reverse gear can increase the risk of a crash.

For vehicles affected by the power sliding-door recall, Honda says water may enter the outer handles of the sliding doors and drip onto the cables connected to the door latch mechanisms. In freezing temperatures, ice may form on the cable, hindering proper cable movement and potentially preventing the door from latching. An unlatched sliding door could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the chance of injury to passengers, Honda says.

Honda says there have been no reports of crashes or injuries related to either of these recalls.

The backup camera recall affects 2019-2020 Odyssey minivans, and the power sliding-door recall affects 2018-2020 Odyssey minivans.

The Details

Vehicles recalled: 212,068 model-year 2019-2020 Odyssey minivans are being recalled for a backup camera issue. The power sliding-door recall involves 324,194 model-year 2018-2020 Odyssey minivans. Honda will notify owners of the affected vehicles. Both recalls are expected to begin on Sept. 23, 2020.

The Problems
Backup camera:
Water may get into the backup camera mounting holes, enter the camera lens, and cause a distorted image, or provide no image at all. Also, if the backup camera’s view mode is set to “top-down view,” or switched from that view to another mode in a bright environment, the image may not display, according to Honda.

Power sliding door: Water may enter the outer door handle cables for the sliding doors. If this occurs, the outer door handle cables may freeze in cold temperatures, preventing the sliding door from securely latching.

The Fix
Backup camera:
Honda dealerships will replace the backup camera with an updated unit, free of charge.

Power sliding door: Honda dealerships will replace the power sliding-door outer handle cables, free of charge.
