Kia is recalling over 128,000 Soul hatchbacks from the 2014 model year because their front airbags may not deploy in a crash. If this happens, occupants may not be properly protected.

The automaker started an investigation into the issue after a 2019 lawsuit, which alleged the front airbags of a 2014 Soul did not go off in a crash. After two years of investigation, the automaker told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the problem occurs only when both the vehicle’s left and right airbag sensors lose communication during the early phases of a crash. Kia dealers will update the airbag control unit (ACU) software so that the airbags will deploy even if communication is lost.

There has been one crash and one injury related to this recall, according to documents that Kia provided to NHTSA.

The Details

Vehicles recalled: 2014 Kia Soul hatchbacks manufactured between July 21, 2013, and June 20, 2014.

The problem: The vehicle’s front airbags may not deploy when communication is lost with both left and right airbag sensors during the early phases of a crash.

The fix: Hyundai dealers will update the vehicles’ ACU software, free of charge, to prevent this issue.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
