Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2012 Acura MDX owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Went to get an alignment, found out that the RR lower track arm bushings had worn out and had to have an adjustable replacement for $300, I later replaced the LR myself for $75"

Allen S., CO (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)
Electronic or air suspension

"This MDX has a ride selection comfort button. It started to ride very hard. I took it in and it had a blown electronic shock in the rear and they said the two front Magnetic shocks were bad. $5,000 in work. But I see no change in the ride when I turn the comfort switch off, so I am not sure that was even the real problem."

Anonymous, CT (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"The suspension makes clicking noise when I turn."

Christopher R., CA (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)
Power steering leaks

"Had to replace power steering unit twice within 8 months. Due to a defective unit being used the first time."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)
Power steering pumps and hoses

"The power steering pump would be noisy/whine when it got hot, after highway freeway driving. The dealership replaced the pump, solving the problem"

William M., WA (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"Needed to replace power steering pump"

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"the power steering was making a groaning noise. This started the day the dealership performed100K timing belt service. It had been just fine prior to that. The dealership replaced it at no cost to me. All is well"

John C., MO (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"Power steering column cracked and leaked fluid; creating a screeching noise-cost $600 to fix"

Anonymous, GA (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)
Shocks or struts

"front adjustable suspension began to get bouncy/sloppy ride. the issue was traced to the shocks. all 4 were replaced under warranty by the dealer. EXCELLENT service support!"

Benaron G., AB (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"Noticed hydraulic fluid on my garage floor. It was from the struts - a safety concern. They checked the other side and it had the same failure. Fixed under warranty"

Charles P., MA (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"electronic struts squeeks"

Anonymous, WV (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"Struts were blown when I bought the car and needed to be replaced b/c of vibration"

Anonymous, CO (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"OEM adjustable dampers would have cost $5000 to install, 1/2 the value of the SUV. Aftermarket standard struts were $2000. Both too expensive."

Anonymous, KY (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"2 shocks have broken in past 12 months without extreme wear and tear. Shocks are very expensive."

Anonymous, ON (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"Rear shock absorbers had to be replaced. They were providing little absorption."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"OEM replacement estimate was $4900 including labor. Aftermarket shocks were $1800 including labor."

Anonymous, KY (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"during my last service visit the front steering felt sloppy. the dealership found that there was a loose component in the steering linkage. the dealership replaced the connecting parts and performed an alignment - all under extended warranty. again Excellent Service"

Benaron G., AB (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"Clicking when tight around tight street corner turned out to be 2 axles replced on warranty"

Leo B., NB (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)
Steering wheel vibration

"Shimmy/vibration since I purchased. Tires were replaced twice at purchase to try and rectify the problem. Dealer blamed aluminum suspension for "road feel/vibration." Tires also wear unevenly. No problems like this with 2004 MDX previously owned"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)
Tie rods

"Never really noticed a problem. It was discovered during an oil change inspection. The was a small amount of uneven tire wear. We had the work done."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"The dealer couldn't aim the lights to my satisfaction."

Anonymous, PA (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"The electrical circuitry that controls the headlights failed in August while traveling: $1200 repair. It happened again in December at home. I took it to our dealership, which put some effort into finding out why it happened, and they discovered that water was getting into the headlight and shorting out the circuitry. It took over a month to get the parts, which meant I couldn't drive at night during this period. So far, this repair worked. Acura supplied the parts at 50% off, but I had to pay the labor on the 2nd repair."

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"The Honda/Acura J37A engine uses excessive oil which Acura is trying to claim is not excessive when it is less than 1 quart/1000 miles. The 2008-2014 cylinders were lined with a new alloy which is abrasive on the cylinder rings and causes the engine to burn excessive oil. Acura is working hard to downplay this defect. 2007 engines never had this problem and did not have cylinders like this- I had one and it never used any oil between oil changes. Acura MAY provide a "goodwill" correction if"

John M., NC (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"The oil consumption is too high, using close to two quarts per 5000 mi. There is a recall for high consumption due to defective rings however consumption tests on my car aren't high enough to warrant a ring job."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"The car has a high rate of oil burn, Acura has been testing it over a year and they have denied that it was a high enough rate to fix. Then the last check up the dealer said the burn rate was sufficient for a fix, but we were 6 days past the warranty period. We contacted a law firm who has a pending class action suit against Honda/Acura and they stated that Acura should fix my car and that it's within the warranty period. The matter is still unresolved as Acura has not yet agreed to fix the vehicle."

Anonymous, MN (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"Engine was burning oil"

Anonymous, IN (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"The engine used excessive oil - so much that there is a class-action law suit against Honda. About 1 quart every 1000 miles; Honda says that this is normal. If you run to the dealer and get them to officially check the oil every 1000 miles, and it is burning a quart in less than 1000 miles, then Honda MAY replace the piston heads - ONLY the piston heads, not the rocker arms. I know of one fix where the engine blew up because the new cylinder wouldn't swivel precisely on the OLD, USED rocker arm. To get that replaced, you have to pay out of pocket about $1600 for new rocker arms. I mean, a ring job at 100,000 miles? I have found out that just in Atlanta, there are dozens of Acura MDX's waiting for Honda to fix them. This all is due to Honda re-designing the cylinders and lining trying to get better gas mileage on 5W-20 oil. I had a 2007 MDX and NEVER had to add oil between 7500 mile changes. Now I have to add oil every third gas fill-up. I. cannot believe Consumer Reports has missed this on this year model and engine. Rated it EXCELLENT - one of the reasons I bought it. Now I am not sure who to trust for car evaluations."

"warped causing vibration upon braking"

Christopher R., FL (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"The front rotor apparently warped and required refacing. It occurred once at about 12000 mi9. , and again more recently. It was rectified by refacing on the vehicle. It is now reoccurring when defending steep long declines."

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Accessory belts or pulleys

Anonymous, TX (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)
Engine computer

"Multiple engine lights came on after a service and engine ran rough. Took back to dealer (who serviced) and they reset it. Ran well afterwards"

Anonymous, MA (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"Last winter, the electronic throttle relay quit working, so that the vehicle could go no more than 20 mph. The relay began working again with warmer weather. It has not yet been repaired."

Justin Y., IL (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"Not sure that it is a leak. The oil I think is burning up and I have to add two qts at the 35% oil life point"

Christina R., PA (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"Issue losing oil traced to fuel pump gasket which was replaced. Hard to get at so expensive repair. Still losing oil - Engine light on - and dealer is doing an oil consumption test - measuring every 1K mikes for 4K miles to determine if engine defect issue and if rebuild needed. In the middle of that now"

Susan D., NJ (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"Returning from a 600 miles trip, oil level light flashed on panel. Checking dipstick showed the car only had 1 quart of oil in engine. Acura has a Technical Service Bulletin on 2012 MDX with excessive oil consumption."

Anonymous, MD (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"Excessive oil consumption. It runs out of oil between its regularly scheduled oil changes. They tell me this is normal but it has never happened with any car I have owned before."

Anonymous, KS (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"The car has “burned” oil ever since we bought it. We’ve routinely had to add about a 1 qt of oil for each oil change. This typically has to be added when the car indicates there’s 50% oil life remaining."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

Battery (not hybrid or electric)

"On April 19,2020 the MDX wouldn't start in our garage. I put my battery charger on overnight and it still wouldn't crank. I had AAA come out, the technician tested the battery and said it had a bad cell, and I had him replace the battery. The defective battery was a genuine Acura battery purchased at the Dealer less than 3 years ago and still under warranty. I decided to forego that warranty because it was more trouble than it was worth to have the MDX towed to the Dealer just to save $150. Keeping my wife happy is worth more than $150."

Anonymous, GA (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)

"Acura dealership installed battery only lasted 36 months."

Randall P., TX (2012 Acura MDX None 3.7-L V6)
