For years, the upscale MDX has been a popular choice among Consumer Reports readers and one of our higher-rated SUVs. Thankfully, the redesigned, third-generation model continues that tradition. Overall, it's a well-rounded SUV that does most things well. The hushed cabin and supple ride are a step up over the previous version. The 3.5-liter V6 engine is quick, responsive and refined.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Acura MDX owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Backup camera wouldn't turn off. Fixed by software update at dealer"

Anonymous, CT (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The left rear sensors stopped working correctly. We took the car to Acura and they told us that they could not repair one sensor. The cost to repair all six sensors was over $700. We chose not to have the system repaired. Now none of the sensors are working when you back up the car."

Richard M., MI (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Camera turns from Colour view to Black and White"

Vince G., ON (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Backup camera bracket broke. Had to replace whole camera and recalibrate. It still worked, but flopped around"

William S., OH (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Front collision alert randomally comes on"

Larry H., AB (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Improper beeping on backing up"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
CD player

"inoperative"

Steve L., ID (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Display screen difficult to see

"The 2014 Navigation and traffic is impossible to use while in motion. It does not respond and creates a MAJOR safety issue to use"

Michael C., IL (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Resolution appears low do everything including backup camera is muddy"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Display screen freezes up

"After mandatory infotainment software upgrade by dealer, is unusable. Was 1-2 sec response prior, now often 30-40 sec lock up. Dealer says working as expected, no fix possible."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Electronics went crazy. Lights flashing, door locks would not work, windows would not roll down, tail gate would not open, heater stuck on high. Was in the shop for over a week. They took out CPU and put in in another MDX and it worked. They put in back in mine and it worked. They said it must have been a loose connection!"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Whole infotainment system is an embarrassment in design and implementation. Generally very laggy and awkward to use. The random laggyness is a distraction when driving and the menu navigation controls are haphazard in nature. Compared with my other car's MIB II system the Acura is a mess."

Tara G., MA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The total screen system and control unit went on and off sporadically, and needed to be completely replaced"

Anonymous, IL (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The back-up camera screen will occasionally become frozen in the camera view even while going forward or go blank all together"

Anonymous, OR (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"An issue when using the GPS, phone and other items at the same time - GPS would hang and the car would need to be turned off and restarted to unfreeze the system"

Colin D., ON (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Navigation screen will not respond to commands for a full two minutes after engine start"

Carl R., VA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"The infotainment system reboots itself. This restarts the Navigation and entertainment system. It also give a warning message Vehicle Stability Assist:61-12 This has to do with the stability assist module not receiving power."

Anonymous, GA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The touch buttons on the display screen at times flash on and off. When this happens heat turns off and nothing can be done until the touch buttons reappear"

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Related to previous problem"

Anonymous, IL (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"We have continuing problems with the navigation/control system. It works most of the time, but it seems to simply stop working at random times. I wish Acura would go back to buttons on the dashboard for functions, rather than use the touchscreen for everything"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Difficult to use. Not intuitive"

Rick B., MO (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The entire HMI system is awful. Too many screen "button" pushes to execute simple commands, RR camera super slow to activate, music from plugged in iPhone phone stops playing when bluetooth pairs; have to turn radio power off then on to resume music"

Derek G., OH (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Does not consistently play when USB device is selected"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Unable to connect usb hub consistently. Often system says not connected to iPod"

Carl R., VA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Difficult to navigate with controls, does not respond well to voice commands."

Daniel B., CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"iPhone and 12 year old Garmin far easier to use. GPS is maddening to use. After putting in all the information it then asks you if you want to go there? Why does the system think you put this information in for if not to go there? Very confusing to use and several tries have to be done until it finds where you want to go. Often putting in street first is most effective rather than using city first. Use my iPhone more than I use the GPS. In addition they send you requests for updates for $175 which is more than a separate GPS that works much better. whoever thought of this system should be fired. It is probably the result of a lot of accidents. Writing to the company or reporting to the dealer is of no use since they do not make it and there is no upgrade for this flawed GPS."

Anonymous, CT (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Does its own thing regardless of what I need"

Anonymous, NM (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The problem is that the GPS is s l o w.....Takes forever to input address, etc. Won't let the address to be input while moving even by passenger."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"This is an archaic system with insufficient information to be useful."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Navigation system is terrible. Not user friendly at all. if I would have known before hand I would not have bought the car."

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Last summer I installed the 2 cds to update the GPS. It did not correct erroneous directions to houses in New London, NH or in a few other locations that I know of. Apparently they use the same data base as Garmin. The system will freeze up, e.g, we've started out on a trip in which the time to reach destination was over three hours. After driving 20 minutes the time froze and did not reduce after driving over 20 minutes. Also the heater controls, i.e., sync change. The installation takes 75 minutes with the engine idling. After that to complete the installation you must run the car for five hours. The first part, 75 minutes, takes personal attention. The second part proceeds automatically. I called the dealer asking for some resolution and suggested he tell ACURA. The answer was ACURA DOESNT LISTEN TO US."

Anonymous, NH (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Almost completely unusable. Can't input anything while driving except via voice and the voice recognition is always unreliable and just not worth the bother. Therefore, never use in-car nav and laugh at the idea of paying for updates. Andoid Auto is the way to go."

Tara G., MA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Acura does not seem to be willing to resolve software issues. Their human factors design is poor."

Anonymous, GA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"I did better with my Garmin. This one doesn't have all the features that my Garmin GPS does. Also the voice controls are worthless"

Margo P., PA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"system not upgraded"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Not intuitive. Horrible GPS. Takes forever. Cant use voice while driving. Takes forever. Stupid"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"It is extremely difficult to enter addresses. The system does not allow a front seat passenger to assist the driver with the navigation system. I have found Google maps to be more accurate and reliable and I use my smartphone instead of the Acura sy"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The software is terrible. It can't find places two blocks from my house, doesn't know about streets, and is incredibly difficult to program. I no longer use it. Thank goodness for WAZE"

Len G., CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Old data base. In Dallas - Routed off of route, did a lop and back onto the original route. Is Kansas City and Des Moines, routed off of I-35 and I-80 incorrectly. South of Burlington on US 61 data base doesn't rcognize divided highway constructed m"

Jeffery R., KS (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The system came out of date and functions inaccurately to point that we do not trust it, but instead use a hand held Garmin"

Paul M., GA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Very confusing"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Robert C., ON (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Poor system design. Verbal commands almost impossible to use. Dealer not helpful"

Anonymous, MN (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Like the larger easy to read screen. System input is logically and easy with when parked but with Acura's inferior voice rec it next to impossible to input changes when the vehicle is moving. And Acura does not support having the passenger input the changes. Once the system is programed it works well 90% of the time but we have to keep paper maps as it occasionally sends us in the wrong direction in areas where the roads have not changed for many years. It also appeared to be out of date wh"

Calvin N., AB (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"The audio quality of bluetooth in this car is terrible. Not related to the phone either. Acura dealer useless."

John H., CT (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The stereo system had repeated issues pairing with my iPhone, would play audio at a 3 second delay, and input via the touchscreen or steering wheel (pausing, skipping tracks, etc.) would take 3-5 seconds to control the phone, or sometimes not work at all."

Natania B., NC (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The phone pairing with my iPhone does not work for incoming calls. It does work for outgoing calls. This problem has existed for two years. I have asked for help with this problem at the Acura dealership where I purchased the vehicle. They were unable to solve the problem and referred me to the on line help for the national Acura organization. The representatives on this help line said that this problem was caused because my upgraded Phones, 6s and 11 are incompatible with the Acura software on my vehicle. They said that Acura would not, or could not, fix this problem. Otherwise, I have had excellent service from the vehicle."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"unable to pair with iphone. will pair with android"

John E., CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Took it in numerous times to get Bluetooth synced to my iPhone. Way finally told by manager that even he bought another kind of phone"

Anonymous, GA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"In October 2017, the Bluetooth failed to pair with my iPhone. The dealer told me I needed to get an android phone. That was not a satisfactory answer. I was told that it was an Apple issue and Apple said it was an Acura issue."

Anonymous, SC (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Switching between phones paired (mine/my spouse) is extremely difficult and often fails. Often the phone book from the phone does not download to the car. Data from the bluetooth audio source (name, title, cover art, etc.) is often not captured by the car."

Cole-Christy C., GA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Bluetooth occasionally does not engage with iPhone 6. Need to initiate pairing. Additionally text messaging feature works only one way and only intermittently"

John V., CT (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Michael G., NJ (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, ON (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Software update fixes

"MDX electronic system is not compatible with Apple iPhone. Phone calls are missed, text message notifications don’t come through, etc. Have spoken with Acura about the issue several times. They acknowledge the problem exists but offer no solution."

Jim B., KS (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Steering wheel controls

"Vehicle has lane assist where the car is supposed to stay in lane. It never worked right. It always goes over to the left side of the lane. Then the lane departure warning goes off. It's a great feature if it worked right."

Anonymous, MA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"cruise controls were not fully functional auto window wiper needed to be fixed"

Sarber K., TX (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Voice control commands

"In dash GPS/RADIO is the worst system I have ever encountered. It fails to recognize voice commands more often than not. Sometimes it fails to pair with iPhone making it impossible to use. I keep my 12 y.o. Garmin in the car since it always recognizes voice commands. I don't even try to use voice commands since it is distracting and I feel it may cause an accident. Dealer says nothing can be done to upgrade/improve system. I would NOT get a car with this system again. Biggest deterrent to buying this car again. Absolutely maddening to use and I have checked with other MDX users who feel the same way. I have never had anyone say they enjoyed using it. If iPhone is in the same pocket with key fob, car will not open or start and they say nothing can be done to fix it! Otherwise, love the car and wish they would simply allow directions from phone to be shown on screen. Screen placement makes one look off the road and to the left which is a driving hazard. Sometimes voice commands result in absolutely bizarre suggestions that are nowhere near the items you are looking for. Frequently it says voice recognition not available!"

Anonymous, CT (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"will not follow commands."

Anonymous, NM (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, FL (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"For five of the six years of car ownership, the voice recognition system has not worked for navigation use. Using voice commands for telephoning hasn't worked for four years. The dealership tells me that it works. I'm sure they cannot repair it."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"I've never been able to use the voice control commands. The system doesn't understand me."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Doesn't recognize commands. Simply put it doesn't work."

D G., GA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Voice controls are terrible. It's leave the automated phone attendant from hell. The 2015 model was issued a software update but the 2014 model was never fixed."

Anonymous, MA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Again a software issue which remains unresolved even after numerous complaints. The voice interface with the mobile device has not kept up with evolving phone technology at least not Apple."

Anonymous, GA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"It takes 4 to 5 commands to use voice command. Sometimes it will work and sometimes it doesn't work at all. Very frustrating. Dealer refused to listen insists it is user error"

Dennis C., OH (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The voice control system is totally frustrating. For example, I tell it to "go to" and it gives me a choice of phone numbers. It must have been designed by not too bright third graders. I have given up trying to use it"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Heated seat functions do not work in first generation system. They are acknowledged by the system, but cannot work with the system. It required a two week repair to swap out the whole navigation system. Another missed quality concern by Honda"

Don W., CT (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Completely wrong responses. "Call Joe Doe" increases the air conditioning"

Jeffery R., KS (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Paul M., GA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Software does not recognize voice commands"

Anonymous, SD (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The voice command for navigation and telephone are AWFUL. It never understands me or my husband and we do not have strong accents. I've taken it in to the dealership several times and they can't find a problem. It is currently unuseable to me"

SUSn B., VA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Voice control has never worked properly so stopped trying"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, TX (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Infotainment System is extremely frustrating to use. An incorrect voice command sends the system to LA-LA land. Can't even adjust the radio with having to use a stupid display screen. Hate the damned thing!"

Richard K., CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Some issues with the voice recognition"

Colin D., ON (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"I often have to repeat commands a number of times before they are understood"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Doesn't work very well. Confusing and you get a lot of wrong actions"

William S., OH (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Voice rec works well if car is parked and there is no back ground noise. But if car is moving (background noise present) voice rec drops to 40 to 65% which is very frustrating and distracting (major safety issue). And unfortunately the system is not set up to allow the passenger to interact with voice rec. Dealer attempted to improve voice rec but with very limited improvement. Will not buy a new Acura or any other brand without testing voice rec during test drive. If test fails, vehicle"

Calvin N., AB (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"System does not always recognize my voice commands"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"They do not work as told. even the salesman said he uses his cell phone to call out and then it comes through the Bluetooth. Would not buy another MDX unless they improve they system. General Motors has a good system"

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"All the carpets were wet when came time to clean the vehicle at the end of winter. After further investigation, I had to remove all the carpets to finally find out that there was a huge amount of water on the floor and that rust and mildew had started to appear. This, both on driver and passenger sides and in the back also. I still have not found the cause of the water infiltration."

"At each window, front and rear, while driving at hwy speeds you can hear what sounds like faint radio static or crumpling up a piece of paper at each window that can only be remedied by inserting a piece of cardboard or a business card between the window and weatherstripping. Dealer replaced one of the weatherstripping pieces to no avail. Also, squeaks and rattled emanating from loose exterior trim parts"

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Bushings

"First noticed a problem when braking and the steering would wobble. It became worse so I took it in for service. They determined that all rubber bushings in the suspension needed to be replaced. Apparently there was a recall or bulletin about this issue but the problem showed up shortly after the car was off warranty. The dealership interceded with Acura and they agreed to cover 75% of the repairs due to low miles and recent expiration of the warranty. I was grateful for the help. Unfortunately, the problem seems to be reoccurring in recent weeks. The repairs were made in October 2018 and are still under warranty (1 year), but I am very disappointed that a vehicle of this caliber is having rather significant issues and that the repairs may not have done properly."

Anonymous, PA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Heater system

"Driver side floor heater is very weak in the Midwest when the temp goes in the teens. Had to bring it in the dealer 3 times. They said there is no problem. The problem is the vent for the driver side floor is to small. Manager said there are a lot o"

"Inadequate heat in driver's footwell, to the point that the driver's legs are frozen when outside temps are below 15 degrees"

James D., WI (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"When the vehicle is idling in traffic during winter, the heater doesn't work well. Actually it is cold air that circulates in the vehicle"

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"Anytime that I backed up, then put it in drive to leave, it would make this terrifying noise. Dealer stated that this was a known problem with the MDX and there was no fix. Funny enough, I recently had new pads put on and it no longer makes the noise."

M L., RI (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"brakes would lock and the car would sway to one side"

Ismael P., FL (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Normal routine brake wear

"Dealers are most expensive and parts may not be easy to find in regular stores. Dealerservice is good but super expensive. Every time I have taken this auto to a dealer for regular oil change ($39.99 on sale). thy come back with repair recommendations costing over $3,000. This makes me not want to buy another Acura."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Premature brake wear

"It looks that after 5000-6000 miles the brakes started wear & tear"

Khalid S., NJ (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Pulsation or vibration

"Prior owner had rotors and brakes replaced in late 2016 to address pulsation during braking. Documentation shows he paid full-fare for it, despite the vehicle having purchased a full SEVEN YEAR/130K warranty. I still have the balance of that warranty, after purchasing the car in July 2017. I experienced similar pulsating in 2018 and made the case that since the brakes were replaced by Acura at an Acura dealership, this should be covered under warranty. I was told otherwise. In the end, I ended up paying for the affected rotors (front) to be machined on the vehicle using a new tool. The Service Manager told me that the pads and calipers were still in good shape, so it made no sense to replace them. In my research, I've read that the pulsating is caused by a manufacturing defect in the rotor, causing it to be situated out-of-alignment. When decelerating from highway speeds, it's most pronounced."

Christopher C., ON (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The front brakes have vibrated/pulsed after one trip driving in the mountains."

"front rotors warp very quickly."

Jeff H., MA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Second time rotors failed causing front wheel vibration when braking. It happened at about 20000 miles and again at 80000 mileage mark. Both times turned the rotors to solve the issue. This is an expensive auto. It should be better engineered as no doubt the rotors are cheap design. No I do not tow anything and never will with this auto."

Rotors

"Rotor become bad driving up and down hills pulling a travel trailer in the middle of nowhere of southern Utah. They first vibrated then shortly started smoking. But was able to slowly drive to a mechanic that fixed the problem for $55."

Willy G., ID (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"They had excess runout, warping rotors, very poor quality caused pulling off center and pulsing every time the brakes were applied, honda refused to replace rotors!!!!!"

Richard D., MA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"In 2016, The Acura's front rotors had to be machined as the brakes pulsed/vibrated. In April, at 43k miles, I had a complete brake job done. I would have expected the brakes on a luxury vehicle to last longer."

"causing vibrations on hard braking"

Anonymous, CT (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The car is prone to premature rotor warpage. The needed to be machined once and started pulsing again within 30 days"

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

"Problem with surging/judder. Started around 45-50k miles (car was 5 years old). Transmission needed to be flushed and ECM re-flashed. Vehicle was under extended warranty but dealer fixed only after heavy complaining. Repaired summer of 2019."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
CV joint

"Cv joint also caused surging under hard acceleration, especially going uphill."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Needed new rubber gasket on front right CV joint. Covered under warranty."

Barbara M., AZ (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, NY (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Driveshaft or axle

"The driveshaft was making noise, their was a recall for the part that had apparently been performed but I managed to convince Acura to pay 1500$ out of 2000$ for the repair anyways as the car luckily had an extended warrranty up till 160k km"

"The rear differential needed service as recommended by my service advisor"

Christopher B., CA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Electrical failure

"The entire electrical system will just turn off while driving this include the climate control, radio and navigation"

Anonymous, MA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"When it is cold outside below 35, the whole electronic system will freeze and you lose control of radio,A/C GPS, Bluetooth etc. In the middle of a drive the system will shut down an will reset after 1 minute"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Stability control (ESC)

"I randomly get the following warning message on the screen: Vehicle Stability Assist:61-12 This has to do with the stability assist module not receiving power. This problem might be related to the infotainment system randomly resetting."

Anonymous, GA (2014 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Transfer case

"Transfer case was discovered leaking when taken in for service. During the repair, the CV joints for both front axles were damaged requiring replacement a couple of months later. After dealing with Acura's dealership's service departments in the DFW area, I would not purchase another Acura."
