Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Back up camera sometimes doesn't activate when car goes into reverse. Front collision sensor keeps sending alarm even if car in park or reverse, for example when pulling out of garage and the front sensor gets triggered by the garage wall"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"overheating indicator in cold weather dealer replaced defective unit no further problems"

Theron F., CA (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Display screen difficult to see

"does not work"

Anonymous, PA (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Many options greyed out and unreadable. Service department tells me it is not normal, but has been unable to fix. Also, cannot read the screen at all in sunlight"

Anonymous, FL (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Too many buttons to press to perform simple commands. On screen buttons too small and difficult to locate without touch - distracting since they require sight while driving"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Display screen freezes up

"same as previous response"

Jimmy K., AL (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The virtual climate control buttons failed to respond and were corrected with a software update, which had to be installed twice. However, the bluetooth connectivity is still a problem and waiting for another software update"

Ed W., MB (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"Display screen software had to be updated nation wide - went black"

Jimmy K., AL (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"About 3 weeks ago I updated the navigation to the 2017 model. It takes 5 hours hours to complete after the first 1.5 hour installation. About 70% into the 5 hour update I got message that there was a Hard Drive problem, contact the dealer. It reset overnight and I am waiting for the update to complete before taking it in. The radio and navigation went blank, I currently have my cd's on the hard drive"

Steve C., NC (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"AC part of display would go blank and both GPS/NAV and climate control display would flicker. Acura was able to fix this with the software update. The update was covered under warranty"

J S., FL (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Hardware replacement

"w cds. defective cd drive. existing navagation unit not matched with cd drive rplacement. still waiting for repair since Feb"

Anonymous, MO (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, TX (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Acura reprogrammed the system. It still is a bear to operate and worse yet, the map programs are very poor. We used the Acura system in parallel with a Garmin on a recent trip and the maps and routing were inferior. My wife refuses to use the acu"

William M., AZ (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Very hard to understand how to work"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, FL (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"System stopped working for driver one"

Anonymous, NC (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"GPS is out of date. Errors in the route instructions due to changes in the roads. Acura is telling me it will cost $250 to fix this. It is just software and my car can connect to the internet. It should be free when you consider the cost of the car."

Stuart B., AB (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Update wiped out the display screens on both monitors. We had the dealer fix the problem. The update date CD was a joke! It disabled all functions on the dash."

Anonymous, CO (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Navigation system routes poorly in some areas. Navigation systems is slow to program and route making it too cumbersome and time consuming to actually use. Problems confirmed by dealer but company offers no software updates or solutions. Disappointed in top line MDX and corporate customer service. Not buying Acura again"

Steven S., NJ (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The hard drive that controls the navigation is having issues and blanked the screen, this happened during an update of the navigation to 2017"

Steve C., NC (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The system is impossible to use while the car is moving. We continuously lose stored data. The map scale does not allow us to view traffic over long distances. We are forced to use our cell phones for navigation"

P T., IL (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"very unfriendly system , unless you know exactly the address and municipality it will not find the address so if you don' t know exactly the exact municipality you can get the directions"

Gerard G., QC (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Since the roads have been modified since my GPS was programmed, the GPS does not always provide the correct information. It will cost me $250 to get the GPS updated. No hardware is required to be changed. For what I paid for this GPS, updates should not cost anything."

Stuart B., AB (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"GPS system is inaccurate and at times dangerously so. Gives the wrong directions, tells you to make turns that are not possible and cites route numbers that simply are not there. Thoroughly confused when coming up to toll booths. Requires the purchase of an update cd. This is high end car; Garmin gives a lifetime free upgrade with any purchase of its products"

Anonymous, MA (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Very difficult to program distance/route map, as a result i have never used it."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The GPS comes with maps that illustrate where the car is with respect to the roads. In time, the roads change. The maps don't - unless you pay Acura about $250. This should be a free update. It can be downloaded electronically for no significant cost."

Anonymous, AB (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Phone paring is not easy to use, the navigation is also difficult to learn. My Iphone Siri does not work in car when paired"

Anonymous, NC (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Many features of paired iPhones no longer work due to software update."

Dave G., OR (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"My car has been programmed to accept 2 iphones. When I start a trip, it notifies me that no phone is connected. Sometimes it asks if I want one or other connected. Of course I want one or other connected. I want both connected - every time I start the car. And quicker than it seems able to connect now."

Stuart B., AB (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"not user friendly took 3 days (4 hours) to get the system to pair with the phone"

Gerard G., QC (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Routine software updates

"GPS/NAV Requires periodic updates. These are purchased Through the car manufacturer (ACURA). The last update Took 45 minutes to install with vehicle running. An additional four hours of background installation is required. The vehicle is drivable during the background installation and the GPS function for the area you were traveling"

J S., FL (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Software update fixes

"A/C controls stopped working and were blanked out. Dealer then applied a software patch for what said was a known problem - and CHARGED for the patch! We will NEVER buy another Acura!"

P T., IL (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"I already answered this! Again , Voice controls causes other systems to change that are not indicated. Don't use while driving! Won't buy third MDX till corrected. A fix should be offered by Acura now!"

Fred H., GA (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The rear shocks and front struts were replaced twice each due to noise in the dampers and clunking sound over speed bumps / pavement joints. Acura is investigating and the problem has not been solved"

Ed W., MB (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Some of the 2014-2015 MDX's have been reported to have clunk noises from the rear of the car when going over bumps at slow to moderate speeds. My 2015 has these clunks which are worse in cool weather. I have been to two dealers who have told me that"

Jeffrey M., FL (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Rear shocks/struts in 2015 MDX are still very noisy. Have been for last 8 years. On a pothole, it feels/sounds like the back axle has stayed on the road"

Stuart B., AB (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"THUMPING NOISE, NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, HAD TO COMPLAIN A LOT TO THE DEALER TO REPLACE. DEALER DID NOT WANT TO DO IT WAS DONE UNDER WARRANTY"

Peter V., IL (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"suspension is known to be noisy going over slight bumps. tire pressure supposed to be 35lbs but that makes for a hard and noisy ride. put pressure to 32lbs and ride is much better. struts/shocks replaced and upgraded by dealer which helped a little. how come CR does not show the acura mdx 2015 version in your auto section? Pls let me know as this will make it harder to sell a car that is not listed"

J S., NY (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Excessive suspension noise over medium to harsher bumps. Nice ride over smooth roads"

Ed B., ON (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"REAR STRUTS WERE NOISY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED"

Anonymous, IL (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Steven B., TX (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Leakage from passenger side front strut."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Steering groans when making tight low speed turns, for example in a parking lot"

Stuart R., CA (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"There is a grinding sound when I turn the steering wheel. I checked with the Acura shop and they told me that is a cable winding and unwinding on a shaft attached to the wheel and cannot be eliminated. It is not loud, but should not be audible in a car at this price point."

Stuart B., AB (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Wheel bearings

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Alarm or security system (excluding aftermarket systems)

"Driver door lock actuator failed causing battery to drain when parked"

Nate B., UT (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Door sensor caused alarm to go off randomly - several times a day or night leading to some very angry neighbors. Dealer in Queens responded slow because they couldn't seem to tell if it was a factory or aftermarket part in the brand new MDX Advanced...which is funny since all MDX Advance models come with security. After many hours in the waiting area with a baby (no loaner because they couldn't be sure they were dealing with an Acura part) they eventually fixed it but very disappointed in han"

Steven S., NJ (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Body control module

"Car shut down stating emission problem just after having a recent inspection. Dealer said it could have been caused by sediment in gas getting sucked up into engine. They didn’t find any conclusive problem."

Anonymous, PA (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Contrast is poor in siide light. Cannot see the information on the screen at times. Reversing camera is often too dirty to allow a picture to get thru. Most functions require 2 or 3 actions to access"

Heated or cooled seats

"Seat leather covering disintegrated (flaked off) both front seats. They look horrible. It will make selling this car very hard and cost us a lot in lost money when we sell it. Dealer said it was not covered under warranty even after we appealed it. We did not use any harsh chemicals on the seats."

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"It is not smooth shifting up or down. Constant feeling of surging or pulsating the dealer relates to transmission issues.Still an issue (only not as severe or noticeable) after servicing transmission and computer updates."

Bill Z., TX (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The shifting is not smooth, it makes a lot of noise, and can violently shake the car."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"In an effort to maximize gas milage the transmission shifts to accommodate the the slightest change in road elevation. On open flat road the ride is great. Do not drive an 2016 Acura MDX in upstate South Carolina."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"I noticed the problem at around 48,000 miles. Intermittent. Rough (jerking) shifts thru the first 4 gears during the first few minutes of driving. Delivered it to the dealer, but they could not find anything. Reset the computer. It got worse over the next few months. Delivered it to the dealer again and requested a visit with the Service Manager. We drove it together, but he diagnosed it as possibly bad gas and brushed me off. It got worse. Delivered it to the dealer again and requested a visit with the new Service Manager. They kept the vehicle, provided me a loaner at no charge. A week later it was ready for pick up. Problem fixed. The Service Manager met with me and told me an Acura service bulletin identified an issue with the transmission fluid along with a software update. No problems since."
