Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

The hushed cabin and supple ride provide the refinement expected of a luxury SUV. The 3.5-liter V6 engine is responsive and refined, plus delivers relatively good 21 mpg overall with the optional all-wheel-drive. (Front-wheel-drive is standard.) However, the nine-speed automatic isn't the smoothest or most responsive. A hybrid version is also available.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2019 Acura MDX owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Android Auto

"It's very intrusive, it messes up frequently and doesn't sync sometimes."

Anonymous, MD (2019 Acura MDX Advance 3.5-L V6)
Backup or other camera/sensors

"Camera is insufficient. At night and if it has rained it is useless. The camera needs to be improved and relocated to be better protected."

Anonymous, NC (2019 Acura MDX)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Bad gps data"

Anonymous, (2019 Acura MDX Tech 3.5-L V6)

"Would stop functioning on long trip. Database is horribly out of date and often wrong."

Anonymous, MA (2019 Acura MDX Tech 3.5-L V6)

"its stink, stink, stinks"

Heinrich T., CA (2019 Acura MDX Advance 3.5-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"You literally have to stop or pull over to sync the phone. It can take minutes to do so, so it is annoying. Other systems allows users to add phone while in enroute."

Anonymous, MD (2019 Acura MDX Advance 3.5-L V6)
Radio

"only high teh genius or Acura dealer are able to handle the radio"

Heinrich T., CA (2019 Acura MDX Advance 3.5-L V6)
Voice control commands

"Gps system difficult to operate. Use Waze instead"

Anonymous, FL (2019 Acura MDX Tech 3.5-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"slow speeds the 9 speed transmission make a loud clunk sound and has trouble deciding what gear to be in."

Anonymous, FL (2019 Acura MDX Tech 3.5-L V6)

"Under certain circumstances, vehicle downshifts roughly."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Acura MDX Tech 3.5-L V6)
Slipping transmission

"The transmission is worthless. The push button shifting is a major distraction. The transmission does not downshift smoothly or accurately. It surges, whines, is horribly slow from 5th to 4th on manual downshifts. I owned 2014 MDX with a six speed that shifted firmly and on demand. The 2019 is unresponsive, slips, whines and is not fun to drive hard. I will never buy another Acura because of this worthless waste of $60000. I have owned 8 Acuras since 1988, this is by far the worst Acura because of the useless transmission and the computer that overrides everything. I plan to sell this piece of shit and buy a Porsche."

Jon E., WA (2019 Acura MDX Tech 3.5-L V6)
Transmission computer

"started 1 month after purchase. 9 speed transmission has problems at low speeds. Shifts gears up and down on it's own. Had it back 4 times and it is ok for about 500 miles."

Anonymous, FL (2019 Acura MDX Tech 3.5-L V6)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"Senses paint line changes in the road , and brakes as a result"

Richard C., TX (2019 Acura MDX A-Spec 3.0-L V6 hybrid)

"The idiotic automatic braking is overly sensitive and suddenly slams on the brakes when a car in front of you makes a left turn and when you have plenty of room I will never recommend or buy another Acura."

Jon E., WA (2019 Acura MDX Tech 3.5-L V6)

"False alarms"

Anonymous, CA (2019 Acura MDX Tech 3.5-L V6)

"The sensor is too sensitive. It has applied the brake warning light and audible alarm with nothing in front of the car."

Anonymous, NC (2019 Acura MDX)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

"Middle row reading lights stopped working. Fixed under warranty. Bulb replaced."

Anonymous, ON (2019 Acura MDX A-Spec 3.5-L V6)
Keyless entry

"Intermittently the door wouldn't unlock with the remote. It's as if the door lock was sticking. I'd have to go around to a different door and manually unlock it when the drivers door was stuck."

Anonymous, GA (2019 Acura MDX Base 3.5-L V6)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

"driver door never closed correctly"

Anonymous, FL (2019 Acura MDX Tech 3.5-L V6)

"doors do not close without slamming them shut."

Anonymous, KS (2019 Acura MDX Advance 3.5-L V6)
Glass defects

"Severe windshield distortion where it curves to meet the frame on either side. Particularly problematic when making a hard right turn. Dealership acknowledges distortion which is also present on other 2019 MDX but will not replace with distortion free windshield.. Rational is that it is present on the other MDX cars. Have spoken to regional managers. It is recall worthy. Even more severe on other individual MDXs.. This is my 5th & last MDX due to that problem and dealer attitude."

Anonymous, NY (2019 Acura MDX Tech 3.5-L V6)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose interior trim or moldings

"Paint chipped off rear below hatch. Caused by loading luggage and resting in on the back bumper to get it in the back. I had it repainted."

Anonymous, GA (2019 Acura MDX Base 3.5-L V6)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Automatic climate control

"I bought this car as my 2012 GMC Acadia, with 120K miles, which I LOVED! cost me @ $6500.00 in major repairs from Sept18-May19,& I was sick of it. I buy only red cars. My daughter had an Acura MDX that she liked. I'd been looking at SVU's for awhile, & had several criteria I wanted in a New vehicle,(mine is a '19 demo which had 7200 miles on it)#1 Gas TANK MUST BE ON DRIVER'S SIDE! #2 LOWER BACK FRIENDLY, comfortable, adjustable HEATED seats, red, SUV, 4 door/lift back door, V6, great sound system!! NOT! I had a BOSE system in my Acadia that ROCKED! This radio has THE MOST AGGRAVATING RADIO SET UP IN HE WORLD! I can't control anything while driving, as the push button (with ONE KNOB!for volume!)SUCKS! The preset doesn't work at all! It skips all over the place with tiny arrows I can't see when I'm NOT driving, let alone try to change anything while moving! What's wrong with two buttons? One on/off/volume & one for channel tuning! I ALSO HATE THE HVAC control system!! The vents don't work as they're TOO SMALL and DON'T let enough air (heat nor AC) toward the people in the car!! Whom ever designed this were idiots! I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER ACURA BECAUSE OF THE AGGRAVATION RE: these two main important areas!"

Anonymous, FL (2019 Acura MDX Unsure 3.5-L V6)
Heater system

"The whole system sucks! Vents are WAY too small & can't direct cool nor warm air toward the driver/anyone in the car! Not cool/warm enough ever, because of this MAJOR design deficit! I will never buy another Acura unless the "not geniuses" get fired & new designers (preferably WOMEN!) redesign this MESS! The radio system also majorly sucks too!!"

Anonymous, FL (2019 Acura MDX Unsure 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, (2019 Acura MDX Advance 3.5-L V6)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Rotors

"After determining that tge front brake rotors were warped due to feeling vibrations and pulsations upon applying the brakes at highway speeds, the rotors were replaced by the Dealer. The issue was corrected"

Anonymous, NY (2019 Acura MDX Advance 3.5-L V6)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Driveline vibration

"Upon delivery, after driving at highway speeds, i detected a shimmy in steering wheel. Started at 50 mph and worsened up to 60 or more, than less over 65 mph. Also applyi g brakes at highway speeds, it was evident that the front rotors were warped as a pulsation was felt. Returned to Dealer, who replaced front brake rotors and re balanced front wheels. Shimmy was better but still present. Brake pulsation was rectified. After another return to Dealer it was determined there was bent wheel rim. The rim was repaired and all the wheels rebalanced and the shimmy is gone."
