Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

While the RDX doesn't push the envelope in styling, handling or interior quality, it is benign, comfortable and easy to live with. One high point is its smooth and powerful V6, which, when combined with the six-speed automatic transmission, manages a very respectable 22 mpg overall. Handling is sound, but not especially agile and the ride is a little stiff. Controls are unusually simple, but interior ambiance is rather plain-Jane for a supposedly luxury-class vehicle. Further, not many upscale comfort and technology features were available for this version. Nevertheless, the RDX proved competent all around and came well equipped for the money.

"Same issue as with Bluetooth. I've tried connecting a phone to play music but it continually disconnects. Impossible to use. Very annoying"

Anonymous, MA (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"While driving my music (iPod) would just stop playing and "USB error" would display on screen. We took car to dealer twice for this issue but it still happens once in a while. If I restart the car it fixes the problem but the car is only 10 mo. ol"

Anonymous, FL (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Gear selector or linkage

"I think this problem was related to transmission problem (slamming into gear)"

Denis B., ON (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)
Rough shifting

"The problem started at about 55,000 miles and has continued to get worse with time. I took it to my local auto repair and they did an excellent job of researching the problem. Apparently, this has been a problem with this transmission. The only thing to do to make it shift better was to flush the transmission twice, then refill the fluid. It has helped tremendously. It is shifting much smoother (most of the time)."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Intermittent shifting problem. Vehicle would not shift into higher gears."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission started hunting for gear about 45mph. Dealer serviced transmission & software update. Local MPG improved while highway mileage decreased."

Jim T., TN (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"We have felt lurching, lagging and juddering transmission shifting since the car was new. We change ATF every 20K miles. The dealer updated software, but only when I provided video evidence of a bucking, coffee splattering near stall. They had a software update campaign way late in the game. I still researched unapplied TSB's on my own & begged for the software updates. The problems have always been intermittent. Who knows if they finally got it right."

Anonymous, IN (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)
Slipping transmission

"Upon acceleration the vehicle would jump. They had to replace a part. 2nd. time in a year."

Anonymous, IL (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Two days after purchase, the transmission had trouble shifting gears. I brought it back to the dealer who said the electronics in the transmission needed a reboot. It has been fine ever since"

Anonymous, CT (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"On accelerating from a stop the car would periodically slam into what I think was second gear. Very annoyed that dealer dismissed this because couldn’t replicate at dealer (3 times). Finally a TRANSMISSION light came on dash and dealer addressed the problem"

Denis B., ON (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)
Transmission computer

"Transmission sensor caused intermittent shifting problems. Vehicle would not shift into higher gears."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Bucking and near stall due to transmission software in 2016.ATF fluid changes every 20K miles. Juddering, lurching U lagging for the life of the car. Researched TSB's myself and begged for the dealer to apply under warranty, which they finally did. I'm a very unhappy customer who has owned Hondas exclusively since 1983. The 2015 Acura has a problem and everyone from the bottom up at the dealership feigns great interest in listening to the complaints only to inform me after service that they detect nothing wrong."

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

"I needed to replace 4 brake pads and rotors on the front tires due to normal wear etc after about 30,000 city miles"

Anonymous, IL (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Vibration in the brake pedal.Acura replace the front rotors and pads"

Anonymous, OK (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The front breaks squeaked when breaks were applied and when turning sharply. The dealer replaced the rotors under a service bulleting and warranty at no cost. The dealer's repair tech stated the rotors become loose and Acura is replacing both rotors and front break pads on vehicles that experience this problem."

Kevin D., AZ (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)
Squeaking

"Breaks always squealed backing up and were grabby. Acura replaced the rotors and pads which fixed the problem"

"Front brakes"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"same as previous statement. they can't find the problem. just the AC doesn't work at times"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"repeat failure caused by service error. Dealership and Acura stated that repairs done under warranty do not have 1 year warranty. Repaired compressor and clutch failed after 3 months of "winter use". I found compressor did not have oil in it. Replaced compressor, condensor, pressure sensor, and drier. Dealer quoted $2,200 for the work. I turned them down because of their incompetence."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)
Automatic climate control

"upon occasion it doesn't work. they can't find the problem"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"After a service check the cooling system worked ok for about 500 miles then nothing but hot air. Cost me an additional $600.00 for repair."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Temperature sensor that controls automatic climate control went bad. Covered under warranty."

Anonymous, MN (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Compressor cycles on and off in stopped or slow traffic to help mpg. Blows noticeable warm air into compartment during cycled periods. Vent temperature increases to 75 degrees on instant read thermometer. Very uncomfortable. While running at freeway speeds it's not an issue."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)
Refrigerant leaks

"I had on going slow refrigerant leak problem since the RDX was purchased. It was not fixed until 2016. I had to take it into the dealer 3 times since it was new to finally fix the problem"

Tim M., TX (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Car had an issue with cooling. Thought it was the fan motor going out, but it would cut in and out. Took it to the dealership and each time it would not show symptoms. Added Refrigerant to the AC and it blew cooler, and still cut in and out occasionally. Car has been rock solid, except AC which only failed after 100K and it still has not died, just sputtered. Waiting for it to die completely before I have it replaced. I am quite sure that it is either a short in the fan motor to the AC or the fan motor itself, but it is still working now, so we are good to go until it goes away again. GITTY UP. This has really been a reliable car and never had an issue that left me stranded....."

Scott T., GA (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Valves in the cooling system failed causing the A/C to put out warmer air on one side of climate control system. These were replaced at no cost by the dealer due to being under warranty at the time."

Engine harness

"We've had starting, charging, and running problems, all related to electronic engine controls. Much of this has been replaced but it required multiple visits and the involvement of the manufacturer. The worst episodes were when the vehicle would suddenly shut off while driving. Other times it would just suddenly change how the engine was running (on the highway and it feels like you slam on the brakes and then starts misfiring... get to safety, then restart and it's running fine... UNSAFE). Other times it would just not recognize the keys to start and have to be towed to the dealer. The charging issue caused the battery cables to severely corrode and the alternator to fail as well. This is the least reliable car we've ever owned and required MANY service visits to rectify. Although all problems seem to be electrical, they're not consistent, cover a WIDE range of parts and have occurred randomly over a 4 year period. We don't trust it and will replace it when we can afford to do so."

Anonymous, (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)
Spark plugs or wires failure

"Vehicle began to run rough, had it in and they stated it was fine. Took it in a trip over 100 miles away from home on weekend. Got stuck away had to get vehicle towed as it would not go forward it in reverse over 10 mph or more. Engine warning lights flashing and stated to seek out dealership not to drive at all. So rental car and all later 2 nd cylinder showing up bad. Plug fowled and needed replacing they only changed that one and not all 6! Did to cost i can see why as each plug change runs near $500. Good thing I bought extended warranty and only had to pay for parts and a minimum on labor. But now when it acts similar in worries another or that same one is acting up. Hate to get stuck in side of road again. At least dealer did fix it and updated computer."

Anonymous, (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Spark plug fouled, which caused every warning light in the car to come on. Auto could still be driven but ran rough: had to have it towed to garage. Turned out to be a relatively minor problem but was very worrisome at the time."

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

"The AWD on the 2015 Acura is NOT designed to work frof a stopped postion. I was told this by ab Acura represenative, when I complained only the front wheels would turn while trying to leave a parking spot at a ski resort. Which I find completeley unacceptable, because this is where I need AWD the most. As in coming to a complete stop on a snow covered montain road."

Anonymous, MO (2015 Acura RDX None 3.5-L V6)
Electrical failure

"The rear windshield wiper came on and would not go off. They ended up replacing the motor which didn’t fix it, and then they had to replace the entire fuse box under the dash. The electrical system still has lots of bugs. After the repair"
