Poised to compete with segment heavy hitters, the Acura TLX doesn't have what it takes to play in the big leagues. While it is a good overall performer, the TLX lacks the engaging performance and panache found in other upscale sedans. Measured against its European and Japanese rivals, the TLX's handling falls short and its ride isn't as comfortable.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Acura TLX owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"The backup camera is really foggy and becomes out of focus, I keep cleaning it and the dealership hasn't given any resolutions to fix it."

Anonymous, (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)
Display screen freezes up

"Display blinks and seat heater controls stop working. Unable to access other controls as well"

John E., RI (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Very awkward to use. Can't find some locations. Why pay an annual fee to update when my little Garmin updates for free."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Acura TLX 2.4L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Whole infotainment system has frozen, stopped working, muted on it's own and rebooted while driving down the highway"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)

"I can't believe I spent 42k for this GPS system. After paying thousands of extra dollars for the system, the car comes with an antiquated database that doesn't even have the street I live on listed and it's been paved for more than 8 years. Then Acura has the audacity to charge me for an updated map $ 150.00 is the asking price but if I buy it right away I can get it for $ 99 plus SHIPPING. You can't just get updates, you have to wait upon The Mighty Gods at Acura to decide they want to invest i"

Voice control commands

"Most of the time voice commands do not work. Need to enter functions manually."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Acura TLX 2.4L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Totally useless-doesn't understand anything"

Gary N., NY (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)

"Does not take phone commands well. If I say call John Doe it will not do so."

Anonymous, (2016 Acura TLX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"In Canada, one cannot use voice-commands for Navigation (to set a destination, etc.). The Nav system generally is the worst, and most user-unfriendly that I have ever owned."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)

"The integrated voice command is HOPELESS. It's so painfully slow to register anything, and on the off-chance it correctly identifies what I've said, the functionality is needlessly hobbled. The only saving grace is that it will allow me to bypass the integrated system to talk to Siri, but it pointedly refuses to work with Google Now on any Android phone. My 2013 Dodge with UConnect was more advanced by lightyears"

Kevin N., MI (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)

"The system is not as useful as that in my 2005 Acura TL. In particular, the system will not allow one to give a voice command to send touch tones"

Gerald C., PA (2016 Acura TLX V6 3.5-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Coolers and lines

"Due to recalled part, transmission cooler could have allowed coolant to enter the combustion chambers of the engine, leading to possible engine replacement. It was a recall which required replacement of a major component of the transmission/engine interface regarding possible coolant contamination of the engine."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)
Rough shifting

"The car downshifts roughly sometimes when coming to a complete stop."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Acura TLX 2.4L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"It was prone to rough shifting at start up but the last time the car was serviced they did a software fix and it is now much better. Not perfectly smooth but it no longer has the rough shifting problem."

Bruce H., ON (2016 Acura TLX 2.4L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Significant hesitation when stepping on gas and lurching when shifting gears."

Michael L., TX (2016 Acura TLX 2.4L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Intermittently, the car can downshift roughly when coming to a full stop."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Acura TLX 2.4L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"For an entry-level luxury car, the transmission quality is poor. It roughly shifts and hunts for the right gear regularly. I had it re-programmed--with no appreciable improvement."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)

"Shifting is at times hesitant, noisy and rough while slowly accelerating. At times the transmission is in an abnormally low gear while accelerating or coasting downhill. There are times that the transmission will downshift will going downhill with the breaks applied and there is one second of acceleration."

John F., PA (2016 Acura TLX V6 3.5-L V6)
Slipping transmission

"I've reported multiple issues to Acura with the transmission in my 2016 TLX. It constantly pops in and out of gear, the pedal goes dead on turns while the computer tries to figure out what gear to move to, and the computer throws multiple codes about driveablity problems. Although my dealer and Acura Client Services have been involved, every time, they both say Sometimes that just happens as though it is normal for your car to turn right on to a road, and lose all acceleration capability for seconds."

Kevin N., MI (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)

"The car shifted jerkily; and after re-programming to new factory specs per a TSB, its somewhat better but not perfect"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)
Transmission computer

"Transmission constantly dies after rapid deceleration. Every time I take it to the dealer, they say it just does that and claim that there's a software update that should fix the problem. It never does."

Kevin N., MI (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)

"At about 5,000 miles, the vehicle's information display went in to full-blown alarm mode, warning of a serious transmission problem. The manual said to pull over immediately, and have the car towed to a dealer. When I contacted the dealer, they drove the car almost 200 miles (yes, two hundred) to the dealership. They called me a couple of days later to say "We reset the computer. Should be all set." No parts replaced. No actual repair performed. I complained to Acura directly, and the case manag"

Kevin N., MI (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Driveline vibration

"Noticeable vibration at 70 MPH first day. Returned to the dealer who found a service bulletin pertaining to that very issue. This involved all new engine and transmission mounts and road force balancing the tires. Our technician advised us the the vibration had been reduced by half. We were still not satisfied but agreed to drive the car for a while. The vibration was still annoying at 70 MPH. We returned to the dealership and got the General Manager to drive with us. He said he could not feel it and there was nothing more he could do. We contacted Acura and got the same answer. We finally got a meeting with the regional Acura Rep, who drove the car and acknowledged the vibration, but said that was normal. At this point we knew were fighting a losing battle. We are currently trying to sell this car or trade it in. Too bad, this is an awesome car otherwise."

Doug H., KS (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)
Electrical failure

"Back up camera went out completely and fixed by dealer under waranty"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Acura TLX 2.4L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Transfer case

"Transmission jerks from a stop no matter the throttle amount. it hesitates then jerks into engagement."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Acura TLX 2.4L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"The front collision warning is triggered more frequently by bridges and shadows than actual objects. There are so many false alarms, it's like the safety system that cried wolf!"

Kevin N., MI (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)

"Randomly shuts off. Cannnot be re-engaged without turning car off and back on. Has shut off in traffic causing car to slow down. This is a potentially dangerous issue."

Michael L., TX (2016 Acura TLX 2.4L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Randomly shuts off. Cannnot be re-engaged without turning car off and back on. Has shut off in traffic causing car to slow down. This is a potentially dangerous issue."

Michael L., TX (2016 Acura TLX 2.4L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Doors or sliding doors

"The front doors wold stick a little to the rubber surround molding at the front edge of the door and pop and click as the door moved. The service shop lubricated the molding and the problem has thus far been addressed. I did see there was a TSB out there for this"

Mark L., MN (2016 Acura TLX 2.4L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Windows

"Windshield cowl was warped. Dealer replaced immediately when notified about it and had the vehicle brought in to verify. Warranty repair"

Nancy W., NY (2016 Acura TLX 2.4L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Squeaks or rattles

"Mix Motors rattle. Both have been replaced under warranty. Occasionally, we still hear the rattle."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Acura TLX 2.4L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Wind noise

"Driving down Hwy excessive wind noise"

Israel P., TX (2016 Acura TLX V6 3.5-L V6)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Minimal paint on car when measured, worn off around the sunroof"

Anonymous, KS (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)
Rust

"After a defective battery leaked under the hood, the car drips rust onto my driveway anytime the car gets wet. Acura has not been able to repair this."

Philip L., FL (2016 Acura TLX V6 3.5-L V6)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Body control module

"Not sure about the category but the worst thing about the car is the auto idle stop feature to save gas. Car shuts down when fully braked at stop light or stop sign.It restarts when foot is released from brake. It can be disabled manually but not by default-it must be disabled. everytime the car is started. The gas savings in no way make up for the hesitation when accelerating from a stop. This was my 3rd Acura butt I will never by another because of this the other isuses."

Gary N., NY (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)
Warning lights

"The TLX is capable of telling you all sorts of diagnostic information on the primary display on the dashboard. It often produces ominous warnings about things like stability control not working, and being careful about the potential loss of braking capabilities. Yet, time after time, the Acura dealer and Acura Client Services say It just does that. Most recently, I took my TLX to the dealer two days after the Stability control isn't working. Your brakes might not, either. (I'm paraphrasing there) message. Both the dealer and Acura Client Services told me Sometimes that happens when it gets cold. Hardly reassuring on a 45-degree day in Michigan."

Kevin N., MI (2016 Acura TLX SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)

Power Equipment

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, remote engine start, alarm or security system

What Owners Say

Starter

"Honda push button starters from 2011 to 2016 at least truly suck. I've replaced all four starters on the four Honda/Acuras we own at around 50,000 miles."

Anonymous, KS (2016 Acura TLX V6 3.5-L V6)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Problem(s) fueling the tank

"Popping the fuel filler cover didn't cause the fuel filler tube to open so that I could insert the pump nozzle. Had to have dealer replace assembly under extended warranty."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Acura TLX V6 3.5-L V6)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Fuel pump

"I noticed one evening on parking that the engine sounded very loud--squeaking. The dealer told me it was a fuel pump needing replacement--at about 4500 KM! I drive the car mainly in the city so do not put on much miles, but follow all service points. Never had a parts failure like this on any new car...thought Acura's were known for quality!"
